Yes, but all checks are necessary to ensure that all of these "legislations" are constitutional. In my opinion, Bush should not just sign these things on a whim with shady research. (correct me if im wrong, I may be)

I agree that there should be checks and balances. It just seems that after a heated debate, when both sides of congress and the president agree something, it should have a little more weight than to allow one person to totally abolish the work of so many.

When it comes to abortion, I'll tell you right off the bat I am pro-life. As a biologist, life begins on the cellular level, sentient or not. Just as I view the human-caused death of a single-celled organism as "killing" it, so to do I view the human-caused death of human cells, in any form.

I realize I could be opening up a whole can of worms, and turning this into an abortion debate, which I really don't want to do. However, when it comes to partial-birth abortions, the only thing seperating these children from premature births on a ventalator is location. These abortion victims are mature enough that they would be able to survive outside the woman's body, if put on the same type of life-support as a premature born child.

Unfortunatly, I have been a first hand witness to one of these abortion proceedures, and it has been the single-most disturbing thing I have seen in my medical career. The child is able to move, react to stimuli (including pain) and even make crying noises. If a woman's life is in danger that is a different matter and if a woman decides to have an abortion in the first or maybe even early second trimester, I'll look beyond my belief and let it slide. However, after 6 months of pregnancy, I believe the moral and legal window for an abortion is over, and the child is too mature to be killed.

Why would we kill you?

The problem with the bill that Bush just signed into law is, as was also your concern, that it makes no exceptions for protecting the health of the mother. The bottom line is that this bill is not about what is in the best interests of the health of society, but about pushing an ideologically based agenda forward with the ultimate goal of making all abortions completely illegal. Even if you or your wife would never have an abortion, I feel it's wrong to impose your ideological beliefs on the society as a whole.

I would tend to agree with you however that abortion is most desireable as early in the pregnancy as possible, but I feel that to go back to the illegal back-ally coat hanger abortions of the past would be a tremendous step backwards for this country.

As for the legal questions you raised:

I'm not a lawyer but it's my understanding that there is a complex, mulit-tiered appellate process for deciding these types of issues within the US legal system. One or two federal judges issuing an injunction against this law is merely the first step in this process.

In other words, this isn't the end! Trust me.

I'm really glad that partial birth abortion is now illegal.Things will only get better and better from there.

I don't see why women(or anyone) should have the right to murder. So I'm extremely glad it's been taken care of.
