Technics all the way ... if nothing, then only because of the fact that you'll spin on a 1200 if you ever happen to play at a club, so you'll be used to the deck.

Personally, I think that Vestax is crap (and that's not because I'm some crazy Technics fanatic). It just doesn't feel right ... it does look better on paper, but once you get to mess around with it a little, you realize some of its flaws. It actually has too much torque - it takes some effort to keep the record still on the platter (which isn't as slippy as the Technics) and makes rewinds more tedious than necessary; it doesn't have a pitch strobe light, and I found the pitch slider to be somewhat inaccurate, especially in the extreme top / bottom positions (starting around +- 6%). I can't see the use for most of the gimmicks, except the reverse (if you spin tekkno), but you can equip a 1200 with a reverse too. Another thing, Vestax is plastic, which probably doesn't make it as durable as Technics in the long run. The only thing in favour of the PDM 2000 is the straight tonearm, but most DJ don't need that anyway, especially if used only for mixing and occassional scratch or two. Plus it doesn't sound as good (yes you CAN tell ...).

So if you are fascinated by shiny things, bells & whistles then the Vestax PDM 2000 is the deck for you. If you prefer proven solid performance, precision, and quality, then get a 1200 ...

TECH'S

Technics, anything less is uncivilized...hehe

All kidding aside, tech's are the way to go, if you are willing to save up for tables, you might as well save up a little more, and take a little bit more time...it will be worth it!

Peace,
Steve

What's the difference between the Vestax PDX-2000 and the PDM-2000? And also, which is most preferred - the 1200's or the 1210's? Excuse my incompetance...

mjustiniano, sorry that was a typo / stupidity on my side ... it is supposed to be PDX-2000.

But still, Technics is the one and only. The only difference between the Technics 1200 MK2 and 1210 MK2 is the voltage switch (120 / 240 V) so it can be used in countries which have 240 V power. A common myth is that the 1210s are black, but both versions are available in black and silver.

Skybreak, how are you liking your stanton decks?
They look quite nice, and so does the price
Does anyone else have any experience with them that they can offer? One of these days I might get off my ass and buy some decks, and I'm not immediately ruling out everything but technics

If you aren't getting Technics, get the cheapest decent decks possible, the Stanton STR8-60 ... since, if you are serious about spinning, you'll be getting Technics fairly soon anyway, so just try and limit the ammount on money you spend on your first setup and keep in mind that you'll be selling it soon.

peace

muahahaa.

jk, i wouldve boughten 1200's if i could actually get good trance vinyl here in the usa. but no, i have to get imports.. and that would force me to either prostitute myself for money, or donate blood on a regular basis. neither of which are happening.
