Republic is decent, but I feel it's a tad overrated and somewhat overpriced for what it is. But it is pretty good, and the ambience is really cool. Depending on what you want..
Supper, just east of Ave A on 2nd, is a really cool Italian type place. But the catch is it's done in a homestyle vibe. The tables are a wooden style, and they sit you in family-style seating. You end up talking to other people and just having a good time. Oh, and I've been there before and heard various GU and other similar CDs playing.  Owned by the same people and in a similar style is Frank, just north of 5th on 2nd (next to the diner diagonally across the corner from Leopard Lounge, oddly enough).
Shiki is another neighborhood sushi place, with really good prices (esp if you eat in) and very fresh quality. www.shikisushi.com
Lunasa is an irish pub kinda lounge, but slightly a step above. The menu is really varied, from fish n' chips to margherita pizzas and a host of *very* well done food. Between 7th and St. Mark's on the east side of 1st Ave.
I think my favorite all around, although just north of the village, is Gramercy Tavern on 20th between Park and Broadway. Although, it's a pricey place and they do have a dress code. But the food and service is *amazing*. Definitely my favorite place around, for years. Can't say enough about the quality. Perfect for some kinda special celebratory evening.
Haven't tried Sammy's Chinese, but I absolutely love Rosie & Ting at the corner of 10th and 4th. The scallion pancakes are unREAL.
For late nite snacking, say after an evening out, Crif Dogs is the most insane hot dog place I've ever seen. At least around here, that is. It's on St. Mark's b/t 1st and A. www.crifdogs.com Hot dog wrapped in bacon with avocado and sour cream, called The Chihuahua... yeah..
For mexican, seems to be differences between people's preferences. Either San Loco, b/t St. Mark's and 7th on 2nd, or Burritoville one block north. I like San Loco, but judge for yourself.
Veselka is REALLY popular, at the corner of 9th and 2nd. It's a Ukranian diner type of place, but the food is really tasty. The blintzes seem to be perennial favorites.
If you want a nice, greasy burger... hit up Paul's, just south of St. Mark's on the west side of 2nd. They have this statue outside of a chef type. The burgers are SOOOOOO good, and they aren't expensive at all. $5-6 bucks, they're huge, and they cook it exactly how you order it. Make sure to get the shoestring fries, as opposed to regular ones.
Right next door is Cinderella Falafel, which is a realllly good falafel place. Fairly priced, really good. Lamb shawarma, sooo good.
And if you wnat Afghani food, Khyber Pass on St. Mark's between 2nd and 3rd has been another favorite of ours for 8 or 9 years.
