Oakenfold @ Nation Review
My post on Groovanauts.com forum:
Well I just got back from an all night trip up to DC to see Paul Oakenfold.
It wasnt really for me, but for my friend who really wanted to see Oakenfold, just because its the only Trance DJ he knows.
So we left at 6:30 from good ol Blacksburg VA and headed 4 1/2 hours up to DC. Got in Nation right around 11:30
Nation is a great club and Im happy to be back for a Buzzlife event. I missed Sandra Collin's set except for the last couple songs and they were pretty bangin'! she had the whole crowd bumpin!
Oh yeah 1 more thing, it sucked that they shut off the front room. It was just the main floor that was open and it was extremely crowded. Not much fun.
So anyways Sandra leaves around 12:15 and Oakey takes the decks, everyone is cheering Oak-En-Fold!! and Oakey takes off where Collins left him, some nice floor-filling progressive, really hard and bangin.
I have no idea what the first couple tracks were, but I thought to myself that we were in for one hell of a set because these were pretty bangin' tracks i never heard of! It was pretty funky hard tribal tracks.. So i was getting into the groove, I was showing my friend around Nation, going upstairs and to the back and stuff
Well then I hear a most familiar track start... As The Rush Comes.. ok well yeah i guess every DJ needs to play it, but c'mon Oakey don't u have the newest promos and stuff? But I sang along with like everyone else..
Then things started getting bad. I don't know if Oakey decided to cheese out tonite or what..but he started playing old and cheesy kind of tracks. I was expecting some new and unheard of progressive or uplifting trance, but instead he played some really old and mainstream stuff.
What I can remember:
Benny Benassi - Satisfaction
Eminem- (whatever that remix of his Nobody listens to techno, im not sure what it was called)
Underworld - born slippy (oakenfold remix) -actually this song was alright, first time hearing it.
Some remix of Prodigy -smack my bitch up
DJ Ton TB- Electronic Malfunction
and after Ferry Corsten- Rock Your Body, me and my friend left. Not because we were disappointed.. My friend actually had a great time, but he has class at 9:30 am
So we drove all thru the night back down to school.
In conclusion, Oakey mixed flawlessly, great! exactly what I expected.. but Trackwise... i feel highly disappointed. Oakey you can play new stuff! Why did you play old tunes from the summer?
Well he did play some nice fillers in between the cheese that was pretty good.. but i dunno.
It was nice meeting up with some Glow Fiends as well, I hope you all had a great time.
I did have fun, because Nation is just like that..the vibe and soundsystem are great... but overall, Oakeys set just didnt do anything for me.
