Computer Problem

SInce the FAQ forum gets one post a day, i'm putting this here in the hope of a response.

Basically, whenever I turn on my laptop, i get an 'invalid system disk, replacethe disk, and then press any key' error.

There is no floppy in the drive, the BIOS tells me that the boot order is as follows:
- hard drive
- cd-rom drive
- removable devices
- network boot

I've already tried resetting settings to default, no luck.

Is a straight out format/XP reinstall the only option?

Dont u have a boot floppy?
Sounds to me like the files needed to boot have been deleted from the hard drive. I doubt u wouldve deleted them urself so maybe it was a trojan/virus.

Come to think of it, I might, then again I might not. And yeah, I certainly wouldn't have done it myself, i've probably got a virus somehow. I've got an up to date AV, but apparently that hasn't helped :/

Disable your floppy disk controller in the BIOS, and reboot, see what happens.

Enable it after and see if it's fixed.

he could also reboot from Anti-virus CD, but that assumes he has a legitmate copy of XP or AV.

kazaa should come bundled with anti-virus software.

heh, fully legit copies of both actually.

I have a partitioned drive, and all the music just happened to be on the non system drive, so I just ended up formattging the system drive and left the files/data one alone. I did a full scan afterwards, but it came up with nothing, so if I had a virus the format must have taken it out.
