altering wav files of kicks

ok another n00b question.

ive always tried to get a pucnhy kinda sound out of the kicks i use... i try everything to alter the samples but i can never get them to sound really in your face and punchy.

ok if u have the track "Fx Zone - Synthasia (Original mix) " listen to the kick on that... its very punchy and like hasnt got much bass to the sample....

i have samples similiar to this but dont quite have that kick to em, the sound im trying for is a simple almost pvd style energetic punch.

does anyone know how i can make one or edit a sample in say fruity loops? what settings need to be changed? can someone post me a sample or help out in anyway..

i dont know if that makes sense? its hard to explain it.

email me or reply if u can

Cheers
Cam

The punch that you hear in drum kick sounds in your favorite trance songs comes from, not so much the type of kick they use, but the processing afterwards. This consists of using specific settings for a compressor on your kick and also equalization techniques to give you a sense of power and deep bass but not muddines.
To achieve this effect, you have to know how to implement commpression and equalization techniques properly. Try to search for these topic threads to give you more insight into this.
Also, the released trance songs are mixed and mastered by professionals with years of experience and tons of knowledge, so to gain that extra edge in your material is not easy.
Cheers

Yes, compression is a major part of processing percuission, but the samples that go into making a kick sound are equally as important. By having the right bass and snare sounds, and whatever else you put into a kick, you are able to get the right kick for your needs.

Try searching the web for some 909 sounds. There are some really good free ones out there if you look hard enough.

A word on EQing your kick:

Kick Drum

Any apparent muddiness can be rolled off around 300Hz. Try a small boost around 5-7kHz to add some high end.

50-100Hz ~ Adds bottom to the sound
100-250Hz ~ Adds roundness
250-800Hz ~ Muddiness Area
5-8kHz ~ Adds high end prescence
8-12kHz ~ Adds Hiss
