I think it's an interesting design. I'm not that fond of it, but it is a hell of a lot better than the original proposals.
My own personal opinion is that the two WTC towers should have been rebuilt on the old site, with memorials at the top. But as companies quickly relocated where they could find office space after 9/11, many aren't coming back to the city, so the two towers wouldn't make the best financial sense. (Regardless, I think the idea to recreate almost all of the old office space, something like 10m sq.ft.)
The 1776 foot height is a great idea. It will make it the worlds tallest building, at least until something gets built that's higher. Granted, the spire will make up a good portion of the 1776 feet. But then again, the spire is the reason the Petronas towers in Kuala Lumpur are classified as taller than the Sears Tower. (The Sears' antennas don't count as a spire).
One interesting note. Do you remember the drawings that got passed around the internet after 9/11 that showed a rebuilt mockup of the towers in the shape of a middle finger? According to one commentator, that effect will be created by the one tall tower, and the 4 surrounding buildings. I love it - New York showing the world where to stick it.
