Smile Review: DJ Preach- Feb.06 @ VIVA (van)

First off a big thanks goes to dj-sean for putting my name and my friends' names on the guest list!

This was an ok party. Preach played an energetic set, filled with pure techno. Most of the people that showed up for this party were not into this kind of music, so the vibe wasn't that great. I find that techno parties are mostly about the vibe.

The lasers at the club were really kewl . The club had many tables and comfortable chairs. I liked the fact that there was room to sit and dance.

Preach's mixing was ok. The technical problem that I found in his set was that he consistently was hammering techno, without playing anything melodic, dark, or slow. People need to rest after dancing for 30 minutes. I thought that he also played tek-house and techno trance? At least that’s what it said on the flyer. I left at 1:10 so I could have missed some tech trance and tek-house. Anyhow, Preach dropped pure techno, which I of course enjoyed, but my friends got bored of pretty quickly. Also he didn't react to the crowed. I think he could have played darker slower stuff, like Dariush - Ira, or at least something hard but with more melody in it. When Picotto was playing at System a while back, his set was versatile. Versatility is the spice of life .

The crowed consisted of rich and wealthy folks. There were 5 rich dudes that kept on buying 20 coronas at a time, just to show how filthy rich they were. Then they would let those coronas stand for hours while they were slowly sipping their first bottle.

There is also a club called Viva in Markham (not far from Toronto). I hope that maybe some day the Viva in Richmond can bring enough talent to attract more party goers and match the standards that the Viva in Markham has set.

Overall, I'm glad that I went to this event and had a chance to meet Anton (Prism). Props to you for making to this event! I’m glad to see more Russians in Vancouver that are supporting the electronica scene here. I’m also glad that I had a chance to check out Viva!

What is the capicity at Viva in Markham? I bet it is way bigger than Viva in Richmond. Bigger capacity = more money. On top of that Danny or Sean don't get door sales so when they bring in out of town talent they pay out of their own wallets.

I thought Preach was a really good DJ. But to be honest it did get kinda boring after and hour. I loved the techno but after a while all the tracks started sounding the same. I just need a bit of melody once in a while. DJ Sean played an absolute wicked set.

Thanks alot guys.

A big thanks to dj-sean

A bit thanks to you, dj-sean, for putting my name on the guestlist and letting me bring along a buddy. That was really awesome. I don't know any of the trance addicts except apri_peel or where you guys were, so I didn't get to meet any of you.

It was the first time I had been to Viva and the first time I had heard any trance/prog aside from home listening. I arrived around 11:00 p.m., and sat in absolute amazement at dj-sean's set. I usually get bored when I go to a club and sit around, but I could have sat all night and listened to music like that. Sonic bliss.

As far as DJ Preach's set, it was my first introduction to techno. Like NightCreature said, one of the things I noticed most of all was the lack of a real vibe or good energy in the crowd. While I was dancing I looked around and so many people just stood there with a look of indifference.

I stayed until around 1:15 a.m. and really enjoyed the music. I enjoy seeing a DJ who is energetic and happy. It's definitely great music to dance to, but by 1:15 a.m. it had gotten just a bit repetitive for me and I had lost my stamina to dance anymore. I definitely left a very satisfied customer.

It's too bad Viva doesn't have "in and out" privileges. As great as the loud volume is, sometimes a guy needs a bit of a break for the ears and without any chill room, unless you want to hang out in the washroom there's no way to get away from the music.

All in all it was a great time. I'm so glad that I went.

First off thanks everyone for coming out, it was a wicked night last night and we all enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.

I guess Techno isn't really your guys' cup of tea, but Preach blew me and all of my friends there away completely. I felt that I delivered I a relatively perfect opening set before him, but despite that I still feel as though I was put to shame technically by this phenomenal DJ. This was the first night we've ever had a pure techno set at Viva and the regulars there were absolutely loving it; the dancefloor was full right until close despite the fact that there was a fight between two girls right in the middle of it (hahaha), and the people who were loving it right up until the end had more energy than I've seen at Viva for as long as I can remember.

Preach did play some more tunes with an electro and trancey feel towards the end of his set so you missed out a little NightCreature, and yeah Preach does play Tech House and prog too but Viva is usually trance after midnight so you can't be playing 128 BPMs without people getting upset. Would have been nice to have Preach play for 4 hours, but we don't want to fly a guy out from MTL to have him play for a half empty club for the first part of the night

Anyways I had a fucking killer time, we're bringing this guy back again as soon as he's available. Can't wait to read reviews from some of the guys that are into Techno!

BTW, glad you enjoyed my set vanc =)

I'm truly shocked that you guys didn't enjoy Preach's set more! I thought it was fucking awesome.

As for Preach being an 'ok' DJ, you're obviously not talking in terms of technical skill. I've never heard someone play with the music as much as Preach did. It was amazing to hear a track change so much from its original state and Preach made it seem so easy and natural to do. As for the music, he played a banging set because that's what Viva likes. If you wanted mellower, melodic music then don't go see a techno set. Preach does play other styles of techno, but versatility doesn't mean you have to play all of your styles in a 2-hour set. Viva's regulars loved it and that's who counts in the long run, they're the ones that are there every week. And as for vibe, maybe it was just me but everyone seemed to be full of energy and the dancefloor was rammed.

*shrug*

Most of the people that showed up looked like they were enjoying themselves to me, tbh it was one of the best turn outs we've had since Above & Beyond

hmmmm not sure what you're really trying to say here???

The guy is a techno DJ and his mixing is as close to perfect as I've seen. Didn't react to the crowd?? Man this is one of the most interactive djs I've ever seen!! I don't think you really knew what to expect from this guy, so I'm guessing you were expecting something diffrent all together. I've seen Mauro Picotto, and I thought Preach's set was better tbh.

LOL

This is pretty funny. That place is an afterhours, ours is a club. That place stays open stays open until the early morning, we have to close @ 2am. Doesn't make any sense to compare them IMO.

Thanks for your review, we like to hear what everyone has to say.

Greetz,

DT

U don't know me but still i have to say that

U didn't like preach ??

What where u expecting ?

A total trance set from the new master of techno ??

Seriously guys before going out u should try to get some info on the dj's you're gonna see

+ from what preach told me ... u definitly don't know what you're talking about he spun from funkytech to total electro ?? what else did u wanted

PREACH HIS NOT A TRANCE DJ !!! Hence he will not play those cheesy build-ups that u like, from time to time he will slip a prog tune in his sets but that's about it !!

Anyway

ho yeah ... for the one who said that Preach's mixing was Ok .... seriously u need to know what his a good mixing ... 'cause right now preach is in the top 10 worlwide as far as the technikal skills goes !!

Anyway i'm out

Bybye !!

^^^ I can apreciate where you're coming from man, although let's hope this thread doesn't turn into a flaming war.

Some people don't like techno, simple as that. Same goes for people that don't like trance... Neither music style is better than the other, everyone is entitled to thier own opinion.

That being said, aside from the comments in here I would say that 90% of the people who came out for this night had a blast!

Vancouver loves Preach and can't wait to have him back.

I don’t appreciate when someone's defending my position on forum. Thanks Krinker but it is absolutely not necessary to start bitching like this, theses guys have the right to post their opinion!

I am ok with the fact that some trance heads expected something else from me... now they know more my style and probably next time they will stay home

please don’t start stupid arguing about musical taste. I

By the way thanks for Dan + Sean for the night it was WICKED!! I love Vancouver, it was GREAT
