Appeals Court strikes down MP3 subpoenas

http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/12/19/m...reut/index.html

The D.C. appeals court has ordered the RIAA to stop using its current methods of suing music downloaders. The court stated that the RIAA's actions were unlawful because the methods were not sanctioned by the Digital Millennium Act of 1998. To me, and probably for most TA's, this is a great victory. It feels good that there are still sensible judges on the federal circuit courts.

I've been keeping up on this topic and this is an interesting development, although it really only says that Verizon doesn't have to give a private company (RIAA) privelaged customer information, not that the RIAA has to stop their sue-fest. I do think this could be a very nice precident to stop the remainder of lawsuits however. I'm sure this will go to yet more appeals courts, but at least now we know at least some in the legal system see the RIAA's actions for what they are. Hopefully they will soon learn that scare tactics don't sell records, quality and price do.

Yay!! Not that it affects me that much, living in the UK and all, but it's still good to hear.

Agreed, any setback to the RIAA is a good thing imo.
