Aren't theremin instruments those things from the 1920s?, where you move your hands around the thing to make a noise.

Yes, mostly famous from those whistly tones they put in old 50's horror movies.
FxPansion had Theremin VST's called Mysteron (free) and Enigmatron. Don't see it anymore on their site, but they are still available on the net if you look long enough.
For Mac, only one solution : Gleetchplug
One feature I came across when building compaq/hp laptops is that you can download a theremin for use with their glide path. It reacts to both movement and pressure, and gives off a good sound too (especially as the laptops had a JBL sound system!). MAy be of use to you but I doubt it

Yeah, you’ll recognise their sounds instantly. It’s those cheesy spooky “woooooooo-OOOOOOO-ooooooo” type noises they put in the soundtrack to all those sci-fi b-movies!!
Thanks for the information everyone, I’ll have a look round.

The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
The most known use of a theremin in a "pop" track.
There is a Portishead track that uses one, but I cant remember the name.

What few people know, is that it's also used in Whole Lotta Love from Led Zeppelin.
