So I've got a crappy Gemini Ps626 pro with rust showing along the sides... I'm thinking of investing in a new mixer, but I have no real reason other than the fact that "I really should". I can beatmatch and mix alright with this mixer, but if I get a better mixer will my skills noticeably improve with my transitions? Keep in mind I've never used any other mixers other than the one I have. Considering I have a fairly weak sound system I have no real desire to drop a grand on a mixer right now (especially since I'm in school too).

if the cross fader is smoother it could help. Also the level controls on more expensive mixers usually have a larger range and are smoother. I notice that you're living in Toronto. I have a pioneer DJM-300 mixer that I'm looking to sell. PM me for details. I can hook you up with a good deal.

if you have the skillz, better equipment will equal better sound. however, if you trainwreck to all hell... you'll still be trainwrecking no matter what system you got.

Get a Vestax PCV-275. Those are about $400 new. I went from a piece of crap Gemini 626 to a PCV-275 to a DJM-500. There is a pretty big difference between the 626 and 275, but onceler is right...if you trainwreck now, you will still trainwreck on a better mixer. It's just that having a brand new mixer that is MUCH better than the 626 might serve to motivate you to practice even more than you do so now.

Endo, do gemini mixers last well? I just recently bought a Gemini PS-540i (as my first mixer) and it seems to be an alright mixer.

if you feel like you havent outgrown your mixer yet then i guess you dont need one. i started out with a scratch mixer and after a while i felt like i needed better eqs and faders because i couldnt shape my mixes the way that i wanted to. so yes... better mixers are generally more flexable in that you have better ranges on your faders and eqs and better mixers generally feel better...

i think it comes down to how serious you are about mixing. if you plan on getting alot better and doing alot with your mixing skills then go ahead and get a good mixer becuase you will end up getting one either way. if you just want something to crossfade one song to another for simple parties or just to screw around...then get a cheap mixer.

to me cheap mixers are ok to start on but atleast for me personally, i grew out of mine really quickly.

use a simple mixer to get used until you are cozy enuff with ur beatmatchin skills then when ur rdy - get urself a DJM-600.. no turnin back baby!

pioneer mixers dont have long lifespans, but that is for another topic.
