Hey... i just started spinning about a week ago and i decided to record a set just for fun. This was my first try putting together a mix and i decided not to do any retakes! it starts kinda dark but gets more uplifting near the end.

i dont know what to do? i want to continue posting up my mixes for my friends and other people to hear. i think having other people giving me feedback is important, however, some people on another messageboard suggested that i shouldn't post any mix until i get better. the way he explained it is, bad quality sets that i post up can only hurt me in the future when i improve and want to promote myself. he even said labeling my mixes as "My First Mix" etc. wont make a difference. i understand what he is saying but i dont want to be the only person listening to my own stuff. anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do? continue posting? or wait till they become quality?

In a way what he says is BS, in another its true.

I posted sets here for the first time last month, and got some good feedback (though like you, would have liked to have gotten more, hehe).

But yeah, you don't get better with just practice, you need the feedback as well. I've been doing a few things wrong and I never would have known unless someone had listened to a set and come out and told me. Most of my friends don't listen to trance so even getting them to sit through a full set or part of a set would be like pulling teeth, so really what do you do right?

By the way, is your name 'trancin - chink'? Even if you're asian, I'm a bit offended by the name, but whatever, I'm not gonna hold it against you or nothing. If I get a chance I'll give your set a listen, though I'm not exactly experienced enough yet IMO to give good critical feedback.

Well... first of all: Nice track-selection, mate!!! I really like the Andy Hunter track as starter, it has a pretty good intro.

You have just started DJing, so noone can expect you to be perfect in beat-matching... like you said: first couple of transitions are really bad, but it gets a bit better towards the end. Just keep on trying hard... everyone had to start once!!!

I think getting feedback for your mixes is very important if you want to improve, so from time to time you should post your mixes in places like this. Just don't exaggerate (like posting one every 3rd day ), otherwise ppl will get annoyed and won't download them anymore.

Btw. another good trick to improve your own mixing is to listen to as many livesets as possible... pay attention to the profs' transitions and build-ups!!!

Hi,

First of all you have good taste in music. I liked most of the tracks you selected.

Secondly, please take this as constructive feedback although it may not sound good. Your set is what DJ's call a train wreck, in otherwords not very good, actually quite bad. However, if you have only been doing this a couple of weeks that is to be expected. When I first started DJing I sucked, but with a little guidance and hours and hours of practicing I got really good.

There are a couple of things I really noticed. First you are not starting your mix on a break in the song. This is very important to learn early so that you will have smooth transition once you get your beat matching down, this is called phasing your music together so that it sounds like the song never ended and just smoothly flowed into the next. On vinyl you can usually see most of your good breaks. Also you need use counts, I like to ride my mix 128 beats (Thats 8 4/4 beat sequences, and works well for most mixes) you can make then shorter or longer if you like, but for a nice sounding mix I recommend at least 32 to 64 beat mix.

Finally one last thing that helped my tons when I started mixing. BPM YOUR MUSIC!!!! In case you dont know what this is, you start with you first beat and count them for one minute, or you can count them for 30sec and multiple by 2 or 15 seconds and multiply by 4. Get the BPM (Beats Per Minute) and write it down somewhere on your vinyl. That way you will always know the speed of that piece of music. IE, in other words if you have all your music BPMed and you are playing something that is say 138BPM and the next song you want to mix in is 140BPM you know instantly that you are going to either have to pitch the current song up or the one you are getting ready to mix in down so that the beats match. This is one of the worst mistakes for the beginning DJ not to do.

Well the only other thing I can tell you is to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Also if you people in the DJ world who are good, ask questions. I am going to warn you though, a lot of DJ's that are really good are assholes but there are some cool ones out there who will help. One more thing I would wait until you get a little better before posting a whole lot of mixes, that or use a temporary DJ name, not the one you will want to be known by if you get really good. Trust me once you get good, people will remember your name. So goes if they hear you putting out really bad stuff.

Well I hoped I helped you some. Hang in there, its hard at first but gets a lot easier the more you do it.

To be honest i think thats not a very good idea writing the BPM down for the tunes. It may be ok to start out with but i think if you wanna be any good you should be able to mix without knowing the BPM of every track

Don't listen to this idiot, I have spun at some venues with top DJ's like DJ MICRO and Richard "Humpty" Vision and they still BPM there music. This is a very useful reference and a lot of DJ's will agree, especially when first starting out. After a while you will get an ear for knowing about how fast a song is, but for beginners this is very useful, and for the veteran DJ's also. I have been spinning since 1994 and use this system still. It is also helpful in organizing your tracks for a set by speed. I can pick out 10 to 12 songs for a mixset and start out about 126BPM and end my set with a pupming 140BPM. It's nice to know the speed of a track and besides if it wasn't important then why do some many mixers now come with beat counters, also any promo tracks I receive or CD pools I subscribe to all have the tracks BPM ed. Trust me you will find it a good habit to get into.
