You are right, but the contest is not a mailing list. We use a mailing tool to register user in a database, but they are not registered in a "mailing list". Everybody will receive the result of the contest 2 or 3 weeks before the event, and an "opt-in" option to be kept in our contact list. Nothing more.

I assure you we are aware of all legal issues on this, when I do not do parties, I work in a company that build email related softwares
