ive only played with three tables once, but yeah the third is really helpful if you drop random acapellas into a mix (which i enjoy doing). also, you can beatmatch two songs to the song playing, giving you lots of spare time to mess with FX, EQ, etc. that way you can get the next TWO tracks ready instead of just one, and then mess around without worrying about beatmatching with 30 seconds left.

i guess it just depends on the dj

Accapella is the name given to the vocal part of a track (just the vocal) or to a vocal alone.

When i'm doing long mixes, like 2 min or more, i can feel the pain of not having a 3rd TT. Because when i finally take out the other record, you still have to beatmatch and so, and many times that goes on top of the moment where i would like to have started mixing the new one.

But i can guess that in a genre like techno or drum n' bass, the third TT can come quite in handy to do some effects... or maybe play 3 tracks at a time.

For trance a third table is useful but not essential. It comes into it’s own for Techno though. You can have a locked groove running on one table or cut between three tunes instead of two. Great fun.

If you spin techno,2 TT's just arent enough.
Some tracks fit soo nicely together, and you still have to cue up the next song,so you coulnt do without 3 with that.
Also acapella's,effects (on recrords),scratching,loops..

I got a double cdplayer and 2 TTs,and I cant live with less anymore.
It makes your set really dynamic if you can do more than just spin record after record

I would love it if every venue i played at had three turntables

I will have both turntables playing and put stuff over the top of both using the cd player- but that doesnt help much as the majority of stuff is on vinyl

it is very useful for acapellas, dj tools, scratch records, putting another bassline in or melody or another vocal line, maybe a dub mix, doubling up, all sorts of possibilities...
Basiclally its another tool at your disposal

Some people have enough problems keeping pitch with just the two turntables- its even harder with three or four on the go and is a skill that is very daunting at first

Carl cox first gained widespread recognition for being a phenomenal dj for doing a three turntable hardcore set at a rave back in the very early 90s- a lot of people back then struggled with two turntables, using three at the time was phenomenal and blew everyone else away
Three source mixing is also another good reson not to use the cross fader.......

p.s- the acapellas listed above- snippets were used in:
1) the realm- - as used in dejure sanctury
2) So get up- used by stretch and vern/maddog
/trainspotter mode

Three source mixing is also another good reason not to use the cross fader.......
