Hello! Review: Hybrid @ Sonar (Jan 23/2004)

First, a big thanks to the folks that organized this event. I loved every minute of it!

We came at around 12:00 and the damn bouncer wouldn't let me in because I didn't have 2 ids on me. I didn't know there was a law in Van that said that, in order to get in to a club one must have 2 ids. I left all my stuff in my friend's car, worrying about the sketchiness of the area. So walking back was really annoying. In any case, I had to get my second id and around 12:30 we enetered Sonar.

I've never been to Sonar before. The club's setup was fairly simple, and the laser's couldn't compare to the Guvernment(Downtown Toronto) for instance. The atmosphere was really friendly. Guvernment suffers a bit in terms of friendly atmosphere. Sonar reminds me of Viva (Markham Ontario, North of Toronto) in some ways. Small club with tons of room to dance, friendly people and amazing DJ tallent.

Hybrid was amazing to say the least. They kept the crowed going with their awesome breaks and progressive. I really liked dancing to breaks. It was really really funky . Every once in a while, the duo would drop really really hard progressive tracks, to which the crowed would go mad.

The highlight of my night was hearing Tears from the Moon(remix?) [Tiesto's version is by far the best ]. Also, hearing Hybrid drop those 3 tracks for their encore. These 2 last encore tracks were awesome! Does anyone know the name of that jazzy track that they played in their encore. The audience was fairly anxious about having to let Hybrid go, and when the lights have been turned on and the evening was coming to an end, the duo almost played a few more tracks after their encore to satisfy the audience's craving .

Didn't get to meet any Van TAs . Maybe, next time.

Overall, this was an awesome party. Definitely, worth $15. Clubbing in Van is pretty cheap . A party like this would cost $30 in Toronto or even Montreal. Can't wait for Infected Mushroom at the Plaza on Sunday .

Once again, a big thanx goes to the organizers, Hybrid, and all the people that made it to this event to support Breaks and electronic music!

Glad you're enjoying our city! I had a great time, left a little early (3:15ish) cos my gf had to work this morning, but had a fricken awesome time. Man do I love the Hybrid sound!

Make sure you check out Viva on Friday, by far one of the best lighting systems of any club in the city and all prog/trance/techno.

The jazzy track, was Sphongle - Dorset Perception (Lo-Step mix).

Very wicked mix of old and new stuff throughout the night. Cant recall ever hearing Western Approaches at a club before. The Tears from the Moon was the Hybrid mix. One of my favourite tracks of the night was definitely that breaks bootleg of Kylie - Slow. The REM - Great Beyond (UNKLE Remix) was one for the books.

Good times.

well...I don't remember a whole hell of a lot from the first part of the party cause i was fuckin WRECKED...I barely even remember how I got to Sonar from Viva. i guess some of you guys will have to fill me in on whatever stupid shit i did last night. miraculously, i sobered up after a while and was handing out flyers at the door for arpy so i missed maybe the last 20 mins of Hybrid's set.

The rest of it was fucking amazing. They kicked that crowds ass with some sickass breaks like only they could do...just awesome. Nice guys too. I'd see them again in an instant Hope to see you folks whom I missed at Infected Mushroom!

NightCreature: you mention the "lasers" at Sonar...Sonar hasn't got lasers It has like 4 lights...The lighting rig there definitely needs an update Also...you might have noticed me, I was hanging around in the DJ booth for a while during the set...tall kid with bleached hair, sunglasses and a t-shirt with my jacket tied around my waist. If u see me at Infected Mushroom come and say hi

lol It must have been that giant disco ball, that reflected the light rays and made it look like lazers. Cheap gimmicks

Not only did I get what I was looking for, I got the story behind the track itself which makes it all the more special!

I showed the notorious party animals how we do it in Vancovuer though... scared them HAH!
