The best sounds I've ever had on an airplane cost me $17. Buy a pair of Koss "The Plug" earphones, and replace the rubber pads with foam earplugs with holes drilled through them. You get a ton of isolation from airplane noise, and the sound is pretty damn good too. IMHO, earphones of any sort (Shure, Etymotic, etc.) are better than the noise cancelling stuff. Don't let the airplane noise get into your canals at all. Here's a link for the Koss information:

If you have the bucks, get the Shure E3 or E5, available on their website. ($200 or $500, cheaper from other retailers).

imokruok is correct. For airplane use, I use the Etymotic ER-4P with my minidisc player, i'll get the iPod later The "noise-cancelling" effect of the ER-4P far exceeds the bose and also betters the acoustic performance many times over.

Good headphone, but it's lacking one thing and that is that warm fuzzy bass.
My Koss Porta Pro provides me with it allthough it's an open headphone.

But you're after noise reduction, keithos27, so the plug idea seems pretty good imo.

Whatever you choose make sure they're loud! When you're on a plane the engines don't seem that noisy, but the noise really drowns out the sound ..trust me!

Depending on the lenght of the flight, these are the best way to go. You dont need to crank them to hear things clearly. The noise cancellation on them is superb. Even if you want to sleep, turn that feature on and the sound of the jet, people etc will fade away. They wont eat away at your Ipod either. They have a sep. batt to work the noise cancel feature, and your ipod can only put out as much as it was originally designed to put out, no more for any headphone, but with the bose you dont need it as loud to hear it clearly, therefore prolonging batt. life.

Combine whatever you get with this: www.Boostaroo.com

It boosts all headphone signals by about 40% and gives you three jacks too so others can hear the boosted music! It takes two AA batteries so, it doesn't drain power from your audio player, allowing you to keep the volume lower (and saving battery life on the player)...
