Is this stupid!

I was bidding for a pair of turntable on eBay, the auction ended but I was the winner. I had been talking to the seller on MSN, for the last 30 mins of the auction, and at the close he agreed to sell me the turntables at the price I had bid.

Right, here is my dillema, if i send him the payment in the requested way, what reassurances do I have that he will ship the item (i mean more than you normally have on ebay becuase there is no record of me winning an auction, hence i have no comeback through ebay if he fucks me, at least thats what i presume).

Payment is also requested in terms of a personal cheque, on the upside I have his address (its not a PO BOX :P), but on the downside i dont have the protection of a credit card company if he fucks me, making it hard to get my cash back.

Basically its 220 for 2 Gemini PT2100 decks, new and boxed with leads and slipmats, an offer i dont want to turn down.

Is this transaction safe? Or am i an idiot for considering it?

Thanks,

Rob

its not stupid to consider the consequences. It can, and has happened. But i've purchased out of eBay like you have and things turned out fine.

Its all about trust. Does his feedback look good? If it is, then he is very likely to honour the transaction. You have his address, MSN, and you can obtain his phone number through ebay as well i think.

If it does go wrong, you have no protection through eBay or Credit card insurance, so the risk is still there.

If i were you, and his feedback is good, i would go for it.

he lives in a place in east yorks, would cost me 22 pounds to get there and back on the train, not to mention its awkward to manage both boxed turntables, would also have to get a cab from train station back to the uni.

Allough it would make me feel better, and the delivery isn't too far from this figure.

does the guy seem genuine when u spoke to him?

i only ever been skanked twice on ebay which is enough, but it was resolved after a matter of time. I bought an old skool transformer for me mates 21st and i never received it even i paid for the extra 25 pound buisness priority shipping (dont ask) from america, it was resolved after about 5 months over email, he offered a refund.

2nd one was in november when i won a pair of shure white label carts, never came, after about a month of emailing etc etc, he offered a refund, but i declined it and wanted the item, so i said i would pay extra for shipping insurance, got the item in about a weeks time.

Apart from that, the most expensive thing i bought was my sony t1 digital camcorder and that was from HK. The worrying thing was it was meant to be 3 days shipping, and ppl who bought stuff from this guy like a day after, received it within 3 days, mine took about a fortnight... and i paid 330quid, that shit me up a bit. Suppose its about trust end of the day, but obviously if u pay by credit card/paypal u have some sort of insurance, not sure about paypal actually.

is it actually illegal for him to take my payment and not send the goods? in the sense that there is no contract, i didn't win the bid in theory and there is nothing to uphold the transaction.

Basically if he sent me nothing would I have a case (legal) for trying to recoup my cash?

I'm worried that i'm so tempted by the offer i am going to just send the money based on goodwill and a 40 min msn converstation. I mean how stupid would i look sayin yeah i lost 240 quid but he seemed like a nice guy!

can you explain in detail how the bid ended? were you the only bidder and did he stop it and arrange a deal outside of ebay to avoid letting ebay take commision (which would be like 15 quid or sumthing for that pirce)?

Basically, I was the higest bidder (but not the only bidder) when the auction ended, but the reserve price had not been met. He didn't actually stop the auction himself, it ended as any other auction does, and all that i saw on the screen was than ominous big cross saying you were the higest bidder but the reserve was not met.

However, i had been talking to the guy on MSN for the last 30 mins of the auction and i had agreed that if no one else outbid me then I would make a fair offer, after the auction he accepted by offer, gave me his address for me to send the cheque and said that he would deliver the goods by parcelforce as soon as the funds cleared.

My worry is do i have any legal position if he decides not to send the goods? Allough i do have his address, so like you metnioned I could always send someone around.
