So I played on the radio....

I say I did a 6/10.

Being nervous plus being new to the equipment without getting a chance to practice screwed me up a little. Some of the transitions I nailed spot on, some were not so good. I never quite lost it, but some semi gallops were done.

Playing out is hard, after practicing for three years I have come to realize that I need to practice more on other peoples equipment.

You'll probably get better at it the more you play out. Hopefully you enjoyed yourself!

Awesome. Congratulations man. I remember my first time playing on the radio. I got the chance to play a 2 hour downtempo set on my university station. The station will let just about anybody put on a radio show. Only, they start you out on their AM band to see if you are any good. [To give you an idea of what they will allow, they let this crazy girl do a psychic call in hour, only nobody called in so she started making up callers, fake voices and all.]

So my first experience was being really nervous playing to probably nobody, on an AM station at 10PM on a Wednesday night. I still have a tape of it somewhere. It sounds horrible. Classic AM sound with the static and whistles, along with some questionable mixing as I had only been doing it for about 6 months. But I look back on it and it was a lot of fun. Plus it led to bigger things. Lately I have had the chance to do a few shows on this thing called “FM radio” I’m not quite sure what that is. It must be some strange new invention.

One thign I always try to do before any type of a gig is practice 4 times as much as I usually do. for about 4-6 days before the gig I play at least 2 hours a day, sometimes up to 4 hours....even throughout the day.

it has made my mixing almost flawless even when I get nervous...

which its funny cause we are learning about this in social psych, its called social facilitation. It has been generally found that the presence of others hightens arousal so if you are well trained at something you do that better, however if you suck at something, you will suck more.

not that you suck, it is just after practicing for so long the previous days you will be mixing with your eyes closed, so a little bit of nerves should work to your advantage.

rock on, and good luck on getting more shows.

I will also have my first radio show on Tuesday, 1½ weeks from now. This Tuesday I was up at the studio with the guys when they broadcasted their weekly Club session just to see how things work. Next week I'll be there again, they'll even let me say a few words in the radio if I feel comfortable enough (which I honestly don't), and the week after that I'm going to broadcast on my own with two other guys..! I'm already so f-ing nervous I can't even stand the thought.

Playing on radio is not the biggest fear, I feel confident with my mixing and all that shit, but to actually have to talk on radio....it's freaking me the hell out since I don't have that Pete Tong Essential radio-voice or whatever...

ANY good advice on how I could calm my nerves would be appreciated!

Worst session I ever did was in Sweden in a place called Skövde. Got invited to do some stuff on a local radio show and turned up with my vinyl and all only to find there wasn't a single 1210 in the whole building.
Kinda sucked having to do an hour set on their crappy CD decks and even worse their music (There is a limit to how much Scooter any man can take... luckily I did find some Psy trance). Thankfully the guy who was running the interview was constantly making a point of what had happened and kept on apologising to the listeners... (all 12 of them j/k)

Best sessions was when I used to have my own spot on a station called E-Love which was pirate radio. Had a three hour show between 6pm and 9pm on a Saturday, getting clubers into the mood for going out.

I get to do radio every now and again when I go abroad which is nice. Allways end up doing a couple when I'm in Italy.

Still waiting for that ever elusive booking in the US though...

Cheers
Nem

PS
Hey Lazlo, don't worry too much about talking on the Radio... treat it more like you are talking to the people in the room with you rather than listeners.
