Heart Of Darkness

So you’ve slogged to work in the terrible weather and you made it in, despite the snow. The worst of your day is over right? Wrong. Not if you work in the downtown core of Toronto. A huge power blackout has hit a wide area of the city, after a substation failure near Bay and Queen.

Crews had taken one set of circuits out for maintenance when another that was feeding customers failed, too. That left everybody from Queen St north to College and University east to Victoria in the dark. Among those affected: City Hall, Toronto Police Headquarters and the Eaton Centre and the U. of T.

Some hospitals are also affected, although they have emergency reserves.

The subway is running normally, but shuttle buses are running along the routes as a precaution. Stations including Queen’s Park , St. Patrick, Osgoode, Queen, Dundas and College on the Yonge-University line have emergency lighting on, but the trains are moving.

Hydro One explains it endured the equipment failure at its Terawley Substation around 11am and lost about 160,000 to 170,000 megawatts of load. The good news it’s not that serious. The bad is it’s likely going to be sometime in the mid-afternoon before the power is back on.

Officials don’t believe the weather played any role in the blackout. But for some, it's a signal to leave early. Because for them, there's no power, there's no heat - and there's no point.

Storm's second wave poised to lash GTA
But the worst will be over by tomorrow morning

CURTIS RUSH
STAFF REPORTER THESTAR.COM

It's the lull before the storm.

So far, the GTA has survived the first dumping of snow, with the predicted 10 centimetres hitting the GTA yesterday and last night.

The snow has tapered off to flurries this morning, but it's expected to pick up against around 2 p.m. when the second wave of snow will hit with an expected dumping of 10 centimetres by tomorrow morning, according to Environment Canada.

There's also the risk of freezing rain as the temperature climbs to a high of -4C. Winds will gust up to 30 km/h. By tomorrow morning, the worst should be over and we'll get only a few flurries.

Meanwhile, it was slow going on the highways and there were several traffic problems this morning. Most involved cars sliding off the road and going into the ditch or hitting guard rails.

The most serious was on Highway 400 near Finch Ave. when a tractor-trailer jack-knifed and forced the closing of all southbound lanes. Those lanes have now reopened.

At Pearson International Airport, crews worked through the night to keep the runways cleared but there are still a number of delays and cancellations.

Check your travel times and log on to GTAA.com for more information.

Due to continued poor weather conditions, the Delta Chelsea has announced it is extending its snow rate for this evening. The $79 rate will only be available for bookings made for tonight. For reservations call 1-800-CHELSEA.

^^^ nevermind the power issue, with this weather, anyone commuting should call ahead to see if classes are on.

Thankfully, I'm less than a 15 min. walk from work down here at Bay/College...but our low-rise office building has backup power anyway...no leaving early for me today

I'm glad I called in for a 'snow day' today.

I couldn't picture myself commuting in that shite today from Barrie to T.Dot...

Instead I get to reveal in my Mother-in-law's infinite distilled wisdom of canceling the snow clearing guys contract because "it wasn't snowing enough"...

I hate shovelling...especially when stOOpidity is involved...

This is ridiculous... we get 20-30cm of snow and the whole city shuts down?! You'd think that Canadians would be prepared for winter and snow... guess not!
