What makes a song good?

I'll admit, I'm kind of a nOOb when it comes to trance and electronic music, well, as far as the "scene" is concerned. "Techno (the term for all electronic music; it's easier for ppl to comprehend)" is foul language around my neck of the woods; people just look at you funny when you say "techno." Unfortunately, I have to rely on Kazaa to stay in touch (I do buy what I like, if I can find it).

Anyhoo, since I really don't have a clue as to what's "cool" and what's not, I listen to each song or set for what it's worth. Since being here at TA, I have to agree with many that some stuff just rocks, while other stuff you peeps say is popular, kind of sucks in my opinion, and vice versa.

I guess I'm answering my own question while typing this out, but what does it for you guys? What is it about trance music that you like?

music is a very opinionated topic of discussion

you either like it or you dont.

i think that pearl jam makes the best music, other people hate them.

taking a quote from Desidel

for me its the layers within a track. take for example
conjure one - sleep (ian van dahl remix)if you listen closley there are loads of layers you can hear in this song and they all come in one at a time. i think its amazing

I dont care what they say.

Trance has changed my outlook in life completely.I've become less bitter and angry for some reason.I now appreciate life more because of trance.

It may sound cheesy.. but trance makes me "high on life"

If the music you listen to makes you feel good.. then by all means..listen to it.

I find that the more you listen to a certain type of music
(ie trance), the more that you develop and refine your taste.

I think a large percentage of TAs started listening to cheese, and then started looking at other stuff and grew to love harder, more intense trance music.

For me, a good trance song usually has one or more of the following elements:

* good breakdown
* nice melody
* many layers of sound
* phat bassline
* the "god-damn" quality, meaning that you listen to it and just
think....god-damn! how good is this???

don't rely on whatother people say makes "music good"
in the end its all relative

you can comment on how well a song is put together and orchestrated or how well a performer performs or how he puts his soul into the music

but in the end it comes down to how you see the song in your own eyes and how it effects you deep down.
and in time, if your keep your mind open and its willing to be open, your tastes do grow and you come to have a truer deeper understanding

If I'm really in the mood to dance, my favorite things to listen to are progressive trance and house music. Much of the popular trance these days IMO lacks the groove in the kick drum and basslines, it's mostly "Bang Bang Bang". There are times when I do want to hear that, but only if I'm in a mood to be jumping up and down.

Much of the trance I listen to nowadays is the type of trance that allows your mind to wander to another place. Songs with unique sounds, deep relaxed melodies, chilled atmospheres and steady basslines. Some examples are:

BT - Nocturnal Transmission
BT - Embracing the Sunshine
Joker Jam - Innocence
Chicane - Saltwater
Paul van Dyk - Reflections (the actual track)
Starchaser - Falling Star
Lexicon 4 - Reach Me
Salt Tank - Eugina
Taste Experience - Sommersault
Y-Traxx - Mysteryland

As everyone else has said before, it's really all about taste and what you want to hear. Don't let other people push you around and say that your tastes in music are "inferior" to theirs, cuz people who say that are usually inferior to you, at least in the respect department. Use people on this board as a resource for finding good music, but don't let anyone else's opinions jade yours, because that destroys the freedom of choice and originality that electronic dance music gives to everyone.

What makes trance sound good i dont think can be encompased by any one statement. its totally subjective to the listner. IE there are actually people out there who belive they genuinely enjoy progressive house? personally i cant belive that is possible..... but these people actually like the shit.... But for me comming from a classical music background, i like the complexities in the layers and how the track builds. And then there is the point in a good track where no matter how hard you try to stiffle that incling to fist pump, when that main riff kicks, your done.....

One day when and if you are more educated in music you will see what progressive house is all about.
