The theory of "Download My Mix"

When making a mix that you intend to give out to people and have people listen to, how important do you feel having new tracks in the mix is? By new im talking 0-3 months old.

Would you prefer new new tracks that everyone is caning at that moment? or virtually unheard of new tracks/older ones? or a mix of both? Im curious what people look out for when they view a download my mix thread and decide to actually download the mix.

Personally, id prefer tunes id not heard before/havent been played to death by armin, sasha, and co.

ps: This thread goes for prog and trance, hence the inclusion of the top djs in each genre that a lot of people seem to copy.

Tracks that interest you, who cares if the song is new, it could be crap.

I like seeing old songs with new, cause it just shows you doing something different than being anyone else.

^^^ yea i agree man, I think sets should be whatever the dj is feeling, rather than just trying to plug what is knew in...that being said, a set cant be to to stail..incorperate the knew with the old, all shall be fine

Personally,

If it's an online demo I like to make it fresh as, something as tight and up front as possible.

A hand out demo, something that will be going to those perhaps less involved in the scene, I mix up the fresh as tracks with some of the less cained tracks of the last 5 months and some golden oldies; something that reflects what I'd play in a club in the current point of time. Also mixed as tight as possible (IE up to 5 takes).

omg i think on this occassion i'll have to agree with psicknosis

this is my theory;

=> i mix songs i like
=> i dont like many new songs hence i dont have em in my mix
=> because of this i tend to feel inadequate cos i may not be taken seriously
=> in the end, i couldn't care less, i just play what i like.

[/ghetto sista]

so to recap, i dont really consider any of those factors stated as critical or important... i dictate what i play and then if i feel its "acceptable", i'll keep the listener in mind.

if its a promo, then sure have a few recognisable tracks in it.

if its to give to promoters and friends etc...

if its a "download my mix" type which is mainly intended for ppl on say, TA;

i wont even look twice unless its all new stuff, theres no point listening to the same stuff as the next person in a different order.

ooh. good thread.

personally, new and old. and when i mean new, i don't mean recent promos top jocks are caning. basically unknown/unheard. there's a lot of untapped shit out there if you bother to search new releases each week + suscribe to store/label mailing lists. top jocks are human, and they're not able to find everything. there're new tunes, that become huge only months after their release date. e.g. petter - these days : immediately comes to mind.

while its nice to see a tracklist of unheard/unknown tunes, unless you're familiar with the dj's style, enticement with 1-3 familiar tunes is wise. that'll do the trick for me.

Bit of a problem for me to answer,

Because the majority of my mixes these days seem to be older stuff, i just dont have the dosh while at school to get shitloads of vinyl.

But i dunno, i dont care if its a classic mix, to brand spankers, as long as the whole set canes, and there are no fillers. Sorry but im an anti-filler dude, if im gonna play a set i want every track to be a stormer, or at least so the whole mix flows well and it keeps pumping. I dunno, but sets like Oakenfold at Gatecrasher 99 . . sets like that are just the bomb, it never halts, flows brilliantly, and no fillers. Top Shit.

But yeh bring on the new the old and the inbetween!

I'd rather hear good tracks which have been played by the big guys (but I personally am not yet sick of) than shite unknown tracks.

A set full of great previously unheard tracks would be awesome... but I don't think thats very realistic.
