Plaza of Nations questions

What can you guys tell me about the Plaza of Nations?

I have been reading through some old threads, and I ask because some people make kind of disparaging remarks about the venue and talk about wishing how Vancouver had a better venue.

Is something wrong with the place?

Also, I hear talk about Twisted parties. What can you guys tell me about them? I'm trying to decide whether to see Marco V or AvB. I read some things about AvB being great but again some sniffy comments that it WAS going to be a Twisted party.

I can probably only attend one event. I really like uplifting trance and AvB, but also enjoy all electronic styles and am looking for the best event in terms of a total immersion experience.

thanks

I think most of the Twisted complaints heard here are because people have been stuck in line for 3+ hrs or something ridiculous like that, usually because the fire marshall is there and won't net anyone else in or something like that. The production at these shows are usually fantastic. The thing with raves is that: a) no alcohol, which is a problem for people like me =P, b) sketch crowd, consisting of everything from 15 year olds fucked on meth to 50 year olds fucked on god knows what, c) non-existant vibe due to the size of the place.

That said, I'd never miss a show the size of the upcoming Twisted 04 regardless of venue. Same with Insomnia provided I actually have money.

Aaaaaaaaaaah, the picture is getting clearer. 3+ hours in line?!?! Are you serious? I had no idea. Is that sort of limited to Twisted productions, or is that par for the course for any 'rave' event held there? Is the queue generally for people who pay at the door, or do ticket holders join the queue?

I can't seem to find any 'start' times listed anywhere for Insomnia. Do you just show up whenever the hell you want or what time does the action start?

LOL. Sorry to be such a geek, but I have no one else to ask. I'm also going to be bringing up to three other friends for their first time, and I'd like to have some general idea about what situation I'm dragging these poor souls into.

The huge lineups have happened at a lot of raves, not just twisted ones, either because the promoters have oversold the show or because of the fire marshall. The lineup includes people who have tickets, so to be sure I'd always get there well in advance to avoid possible complications.

Start times will usually be posted on forums day of the show, and given on the info line day of. Usually these things start at around 10pm.

i went to kiss at the PON last year, went at midnight, waited in line for just 5 minutes, and its actually a really cool place...especially if ya have never been...

3 rooms, the theater is the best room...in terms of sound, vibe, and no windows usually house

and i had a blast that night...and the crowd is crazy like sean said...if ya have never been you'll be suprised...lots of older folk effed up on god knows what...really weird actually....but that's usually reserved for the main room.....there alwas a decent spot to party.

lights. lasers, all that jazz is really good....pretty impressive usually...my only complaint is the sound in the main rooms isn't very good.....and the sun comes up too ealy in the morning and seeing the place so bright is rough....and usually alot of 16 year olds...

The Plaza of Nations isn't that bad. It's just the fact that some of have been there so many times we can't remember. The line-up is sometimes pretty bad so just be prepared for that. You could show up a bit later but risk the chance of not getting in.

I agree with Exergo. The sound isn't always that great in the main room. I blame the noise by-law.

I agree with everything said so far.

Plaza IMO is a very nice venue... I personaly like the windows in the main room, makes it have a slight outdoor party feeling (seeing sunrise and all) with the confert of indoors.

But... lineups sometimes are hell... can be up to 3 hours... and sometimes if arriving at a lucky time, 10 minutes.

Visuals are almost always very impressive, very few parties will lack in nice visuals. Sound in all rooms is good... except main room was better when there wasn't this nose by-law in place... now it's a bit quieter, little less bassy and you notice the echo a bit more because of this... but still fair quality sound all around.

But the crowd that shows up is farily sketchy. All the way from first time youngins to older people way too messed up for their own good.

But... I only go to a Plaza party for one thing... the music... there is almost always great headliners to be found at the parties there... and also great locals. And with 3 rooms there's almost always something that will make you happy.

And to those who said large parties don't have a vibe... this is not always true. There may not be a full surounding of 100% joy and happiness at a larger party, but aslong as you are happy and there is no sketchyness around it is ok (but no sketchyness is rare at plaza) Examples, Sasha & Digweed (summer school 2000 in victoria) with 5,000+, and no bad vibes found there. And when i went to USC 6 I enjoyed my self emensly and felt no bad vibes even with 10,000+ there.

Anyway... see you at insominia for Marco V... and hopefuly at twisted 2004 (if i have cash) for the Vancouver return of AVB!

I hear ya on that one

The vibe... "Almost" non-existent. It is a great venue, and yes because of it's size, you don't feel as close to one another as youwould in a smaller setting atmosphere, not quite as personal... piece of advice, bring your own vibe, and you'll find the vibe finding you.

I persoanlly love the Plaza. The only problem that I find with it is the acoustics. Because it is such a large, high, place, the sound tends to get lost in the room. Your best bet, if you're really there for the music, is find a nice spot close to a speaker. Your ears may be ringing at the end of the night, but think of all the great tunes you'll hear. Because of the size, you tend to lose alot of the mids or melodies. Tracks may sound different than what you've heard before or what you may think is being played. Also, there's alot of reverb on the bass if you're standing in the wrong spots (and there's alot of them). You can hear it echoeing off the walls and ceiling high above your head, giving it more of a double bass-line sound. Almost as iff there's consistent trainwrecks on the decks, really shitty for hearing how the DJ's mixing is.

But to your first question.... MARCO V all the way dude. Armin seems to make more regular appearances. I've only heard Marco V in Canada once before, but I could be wrong.

Dre420, yeah you'll get in. i've seen/met as young as 14 in there... and probably there's been younger. they don't ID one bit and there is no listed age limit.

Mainerski, yeah another issue about the plaza... plaza issues their own security crew, genesis... these guys are hugest assholes i've ever seen work any party.

Yes but that goes the same for pretty much every 'massive' rave in Vancouver. It doesn't matter where it is at.
