Be Cool! Finding a Professional sound

Alright. How can I come up with someone good quality sounding synths kicks, and all that crap. I mean, i've messed around a little, but i can't seem to come up with a real good sound

Ehm... could you possibly narrow it down a little?

*grumble grumble grumble* I just went over it... the samples you download are only half the batter.. the rest comes from FX..

Dowload some quality samples my man, but that is only half the battle. Most great kicks or great (fill in the blank) are made through processing in a Wav editor such as Wavelab or Soundforge. Take advantage of EQ, compression and layering to get those kicks right. Another thing to do with kicks is layering, but don't layer the same frequencies, I'll leave it at that.

In reference to getting a half-decent kick, let me show you how I do it:

1) Load up Stomper Hyperion (google for it if you don't have it) and make a very simple bassdrum like this (www.actionmark.f2s.com/audio/Simple.wav)
Granted, not very impressive, right?

2) Insert this sample into your favourite sequencer/wav editor/whatever (for this example I'm using Orion Platinum but use whatever) and insert Endorphin (available free at www.digitalfishphones.com)

3) Ramp the input volume on the sampler so your kick is really loud and distorting and experiment with Endorphin and create something like this (www.actionmark.f2s.com/audio/Endorph.wav)

4) Go crackers and re-insert the original bassdrum with a high low-shelf like 1.2Khz and cut the top off the endorphined sample to 1.2Khz like this (www.actionmark.f2s.com/audio/Combined.wav) -BTW feel free to fiddle with the coarse setting to lower the pitch etc. etc. - granted it's not the best example but I've literally just done it now and it's principles we're talking about here people! If I were spending more time I'd load up a wave editor and fade out the end to remove the click etc.

5) Congratulations, you've just learnt everything it's taken me a year to stumble across! Go pat yourself on the back or something!

At this point you could do anything really - reinsert Endorphin, put on a noise gate with reverb, recompress it, have a cup of tea - the world is your oyster!

Do a search for 909 samples. Then do a search on how to tune kicks. ( I remember that there was a great post a long time ago, but I not in the mood to do a search on that )

Just experiment with the stuff you've got and enjoy the moments when you manage to take a step forward. Don't read too many step-by-step tweaking tutorials, they will only make you sound closer to everyone else.

Find your own working methods, that's the most rewarding part of producing. Besides, that way it's easier to create your own unique sound.

Yeah, but if that were the case none of us would be on this specific board would we, as we'd all be quite content with plugging away at it ourselves, wouldn't we?

My view is that sure, we need to develop our own methodologies for doing things, but if you learn how someone else does it you can then take away bits that you want to and leave the rest - you're in a more informed position to decide what you want to do to make your sound as opposed to stuck in a rut where you have no options.

The tut sean did on the ATRC bassline really helped me understand the importance of sub-bass and as a result my new tune has come on leaps and bounds - a lot of the other aspects of the tune were to due with fiddling and experimenting as you say - stereo separation for example - but sometimes you just need that break that someone else is sharing.
