nasty virus

At the moment im trying to remove a nasty-ass virus off this chicks computer.

now, this particular virus closes folders and other windows not long after you open them.

I thought I was just going to be able to go around to her house and do the old "ad-aware routine" and then it would be good as new

no such luck

the virus can't close ad-aware, which is a good thing. but at the same time ad-aware cant seem to remove the gators that it finds. every time we reboot the gators are back as if ad-aware hasn't touched them.

So anyway, I went to work the other day and my mate suggested a virus checker that runs in dos called f-prot (www.f-prot.com)

got it, updated it, ran it, nothing. It didnt find a single thing. I suppose that is because of the fact that it doesnt scan the registry and that is where the gators are hiding.

I can't open the registry and delete the gator-keys because of the fact that it closes the registry as well.

This pain-in-the-ass virus just seems to close all the important stuff.

so the last resort was to goto MSconfig and check out whats happening at startup. Well.... the mother-focker closes MSconfig as well. However, I did manage to keep it open long enough to notice 2 unlabeled checkboxes that were ticked.

sounds like really bad spyware to me.

long story short she is moving out on friday but I need to go around to her house tonight and fix it.

maybe someone has come across something similar?

help would be sooooo appreciated

thanx

oh yeah I forgot to mention that.

It would be so easy to do that in 98 but with XP the stupid wankers have divided it into applications and processes. the problem with this is that the ones in processes go by the filenames (sooo fucking stupid) so because they go by filenames I have no idea what is what.

there was a process called soap.exe but I dont even know if that is a virus or not. Either way it doesn't leave you with much time to end a process

You could try booting it into safe mode. If it does load on startup then you should be able to open stuff up in safe mode and remove the program from startup using msconfig.

End Task everything (really fast, once again). Windows should still run (sort of). Then go on Panda Scan or something
