cash to burn...

eight hundred united states dollars.

friend has it, wants a setup. wish it were me

he's having me help him out since he knows squat about this.

either CD or analog. i was thinking, if CD, 2x Pioneer CDJ-100S's, and a Behringher VMX300. if analog, i could get some decks, cheap, again the VMX300, good needles, phones, and still have cash left over for vinyl. only, this kid doesnt feel like investing in vinyl atm, as he is new to the electronica scene and is not sure what it is exactly he wants to spin. he was planning on using this setup to learn on, but its smart to get gear he wont outgrow quickly. for simple mixing, CDJ100S's are pretty good, all he is going to be doing is cueing tracks one behind the other, he doesnt really need anything fancy.

now, if i were him, who has a steady cashflow, id definitley opt for analog. or, if im gonna go digital, id save up and get the best of the best. but he says he'll burn 800 now and be done with it.

what are your thoughts? recommendations? general insight about human life?

feel free to post what you would do in this situation, and go overboard the 800 mark if you will, within reason.

So this kid is new to the electronica scene, doesn't know what kind of music he wants to spin, yet wants to invest in DJ equipment. Look out, because you might be able to buy some excellent used equipment for a low price from him in a few months.

I would keep an eye on eBay. If you are going vinyl, a pair of used Technics can be obtained for well below retail cost if you watch. For a low priced mixer, Behringer is great. A pair of mid range headphones and a set of Stanton 500ALII cartriges should get you in around 800 USD.

As far as CD players go, I can't help you there.

denon dn 2600f/2100f/4000 cd players
denon x-400 mixer

its nice stuff, if he can find 2100s or 2600s they should be relatively cheap, and having a four channel mixer will be nice if he ever decides to add TTs

my thoughts exactly.

i can get used techs in nice condition, a pair for 170 US here in this country, so no need for ebay. mixers, imo, is best to buy new. my local shop (first electronica/dj oriented shop ever in this country, opened friday ) has pimp ass price on carts/needles. a friend just bought a pair of Ortofon Concorde Pro DJ S's, new in their box, the pair for $160.

so, i could definitely get a nice analog system, depends on what he wants.

well, he's coming here with his credit card today, and wants to order, anything, but wants to order it.

You could probably get a pair of Techs and a decent mixer for $800. All used of course.

go analog for sure.. if you have simple cdjs.. imo they can get quite boring after a while. with vinyl at least its interesting to learn how it all began and really working with the music. and as twoplow said, you can get two used techs and a mixer on ebay for under $800

agreed, adn with his steady cashflow, vinyl shant be a problem. and since hes starting out i dont think a pair of headphones and carts are in order. he can put away for those, the TTs and mixer are the more pressing issue
