Hi there,

I wonder if and how it is possible to use the classic gating effect (extremely common in trance tracks before the millennium ) in Logic Audio? Are there any free VST's that can do the job?

Logic should have a built in Gate plugin (in Platinum/Pro), or you could use something out of the Waves plugin series. All very good.

Thanks. Unfortunately my version is not that professional like the ones you mentioned. So in that case, would there be any good freeware (and also payware) plugin available that handles gating of sounds coming from MIDI-channels? I'm not very familiar with VST-addons.

Another question. Does anyone know of any good VST-plugin (or similar) that produces good trancey bass sounds which would work in trance basslines? I browsed through the sticky post, but couldn't find anything directly that would help me in this quest. Free- or payware...

Take DJ Sakin's old remixes (e.g. Braveheart) as an example. Gating is just that sound. It is some kind of volume command, that drops the volume at certain points. sounds to me like automation of volumme via a lfo.
Gating sounds like something you could achive maunaly with automation, or a gating filter that lowers the volume down when it reachs below a certain threshold.
But I dunn how you can really hear that, I use it on vocals.

Which some of the trance sound seem like it was moving very fast and yet it sound like it was been controlled by the Gate or the Muting. Which I had a thought of that the last time.

Am I right of that? It sound liek it jsut kept on rolling.

Why not just automate the volume control of a vsti

I'm trying to see if I'm able to upload a sample as an attachment to this post. Hopefully it works.

This is an old melody from a tracker song of mine (late 90s) that I just recorded to a low quality mp3, but you'll get the point. That is a string with controlled volume. I just don't know how to get strings to work that way in Logic.

Sounds like you can do this by automating the volume of your vsti. Instead of say drawing in a volume swell try drawing in extreme volume curves at 16th beats. I believe this is easier to do with logics hypereditor
