Well I said it somewhere else, but I honestly believe that Melbourne is the club capital of the southern hemisphere. We have a lot of clubs, a lot of variety and a lot of quality, so we can't really complain.
Having said that, I guess there aren't too many trance clubs. This doesn't bother me too much cos I'm more into house and prog anyway, but still. For trance I guess you may want to try Whiskey Lounge (or is it Whiskey Bar?) on Bourke st - they've got some pretty good trance stuff upstairs, or maybe something like Hard Kandi (though I'll be fucked if I can remember where it is ).
For the prog thing, well Room is the king of clubs down here imho. Worth going even if you're not that into prog. Also give the uptop bar a bit of a look in - it's on Russell st. between Bourke and Little Bourke, down some alley near the Hungry Jacks. It look a bit dodgy from the outside, but it's free entry and they've got some seriously mad prog music upstairs. I've wittled away many an hour in that place, partly because of its convenient location (right near where I buy my heroin from........ just joking ) but mainly cos of the music. Not bad at all for a virtual unknown.
I've also heard good things about Honky Tonks and Dome, but I've only been 18 for like 3 and a half months, so I haven't had an opportunity to check some of these joints out yet.
As for raves? Well my mate was telling me this event that they throw once every 3 weeks or so (it's called Sun-something I think) that you can only find out about by word of mouth - but it's meant to be really good and I promised my mate I'd go next time it's on, so hopefully I'll be able to get some details about what it is/where it is/when it is then.
Oh, and check out www.raves.com.au
It's a pretty useful site for Melbournians wanting to know what's going on, when, and for how much.
Erm, so how's that then?
