Computer Motherboard Problem

Hey, all. I've got a Gateway computer that stopped turning on one day so I took it in to Gateway and they said I need a new motherboard. To make a long story short, they told us that Gateway no longer stocks this part and that there is no way to fix my computer...

P/N 4000680
Intel® (Valhalla) RAMBUS NLX Motherboard with Integrated Audio R2

How the hell can a major computer company not stock a part like this? I know four years is kind of a long time in computer years, but this seems ridiculous. Will no other motherboards work? I need some suggestions from the computer gurus...I know installing the hard drive in another computer is an option, but I would like that to be the last resort.

There's your problem.

Seriously though, Rambus never really took off 4 years ago and they discontinued most of those. Finding another compatible motherboard might be possible, but you'd probably have to get it used (eBay?). Maybe some people could help find an equivalent one if you posted the specs on the one that broke.

Hell.. just upgrade your computer's motherboard :P

It takes plenty of effort, and is time consuming, but worth it .

Absolutely. www.newegg.com has some decent motherboards, and powerful ones at that. Hopefully you can find a good one to go with your RAM & processor.

I got my ASUS P4PE off of www.tcwo.com. Tampa based wholesale computer parts. My fav. site.

I definitely can recommend newegg, I've built several computers using parts from their site. They've got competitive prices, fast shipping, and a really good return policy. Good luck finding a replacement, but if you are able to post some specs i'm sure people here will be able to help you out.

whats the big deal, just buy a new one there only like £50-£100, tell gateway they can pay for the item, and if you cant do it yourself send them a bill for a techi to fit it. Or ask them for a full refund and a new pc.

I definetly recommend newegg.com I ordered my AMD 64 3200+ there, at the cheapest price on the net. Computer runs 300% faster than my old p4 1.4 ghz

When you say it won't turn on, do you literally mean that nothing happens when you push the power on button? If so, I would explore the possibility that it is the power supply unit (PSU) that is knackered, rather than the actual motherboard.
