How can you tell the difference between regular ol' trance and progressive trance??

My idea of progressive seems to be different than other peeps but then again, it's hard to define and agree on many genres, subgenres.. etc etc.. Progressive trance to me is tunez that have a newer, different sound, at the moment it's music that's a bit harder, darker and I dunno different.. I dunno , progression from the current.. I have no idea I'm sure this isn't the right definition, I'd like to know what other peeps think so we're in sync when we talk about progressive music...

When I refer to progressive it is a type of music that transcends trance and house. It includes many varieties of electronica including trance, house, goa, tribal, etc. Usually, it is around 130 bpms and has more of a "dub" feel. This means progressive normally does not have the strong peaks and crescendos (spelled that wrong) normally found in typical trance. DJs such as Sasha, Digweed, and definitely Steve Lawler spin primarily progressive. Producers include Futureshock, Breeder, and Way Out West. This is not fact, it is just what I have concluded over the years. Unfortunately there is no specific guidelines for what genre or sub-genre some electronic music falls into.

Hmm... The way I see it, the word "progressive" just characterizes certain types of trance/house tunes. Progressive trance tracks have clear buildups and you can sense the energy flowing into you thanks to gradually increasing bass lines, synths etc. So basically they start slowly but the tempo and flow gets harder and more intense as the song progresses Usually there is a detectable 'climax' in the tune. Also house tracks can have progressive touch, but the difference between typical house tracks is milder than in trance (hard house is an entirely different genre).

Coolz I agree with u peepz, Except for saying that Major League and Binary Finary are progressive.. but a lot of peepz do think stuff like that is progressive so who knows!!
Tracks that I see as progressive at the moment are like Datar's B, Futureshock's Sparc, Innate's Changes, Alchemy's Bruiser.. etc etc..

Since there is no "approved" or "official" definition of what different kinds of electronica is, don't you think that we tend to shape the definitions according to what we listen to ourselves?
I mean, everyone would love to be progressive, and since progressive trance is so loosely defined everyone can twist it to fit their own taste. Personally I like Mauro Picotto and other BXR-artists as well as Timo Maas, DJ Scot Project and other stuff like this, and if asked to define what progressive trance is, I would say it is trance that takes the genre into new directions - and thus refer to my own favourites.

Does anyone agree?

Hmm yap Quite frankly I have never understood what's the "real" difference between uplifting and progressive track. Im my eyes uplifting tracks can have sweet melody and create dreamy good feeling, but they lack the peak buildups and harder elements which progressive tracks introduce. Anyway, this is just my own way to categorize tunes since I don't think anyone can come up with a rock solid definition of different genres and say for sure that track XXX is purely YYY genre. Right?

PS. I think Timo Maas produces boring stuff

Fair enough! I love timo and all that kinda stuff, it just does something... i dont know what its mad. many ppl think that progressive trance is boring but i think its exactly the opposite. I think its all in the way u listen to it, i know with any trance you tend to feel the music and rythmz, but too many ppl try to LISTEN to it, i think you should be HEARING it... if u dont know what im on about dont worry, i do!

What does it for me is the subtlety of progressive. Its not out and out bangin like your average cool trance tune (dj scott etc) its bangin in a completely different way..

i know what i want to say but i dont know how to explain it... ah well

Most of those songs that Mindbender stated are "Cybertrance" anthems. I've never heard of the uplifting genre. Maybe its just not called that here in the states?
