Do specific roles in ethnic diversity in North America actually exist?
As we all know, America (as a whole) has got a very recent story of immigration from Europe, Africa and Asia (although we can claim native americans came from Asia a long time ago).
However, they happened in two different ways: while the US and Canada were colonised by actuall settlers who were looking for a new place to live, Latin America in general were just explored by Iberian countries. In Brazil, at first, the Europeans who were here were either looking forward to going back soon (they came here just to make profit) or were prisioners (somewhat like Australia). The native americans were soon assimilated by the Europeans (and some were slaughtered as well), and the same happened to the Africans too.
Except for Afro-Americans brought to America by slavery, all immigration seemed to be voluntary, but for some reason the nuclei you guys got there seem to be far more closed (We notice black people even have different accents at times). There seems to be a strong division amongst ethnic groups (and criticism over those who don't fit in the group they're supposed to, like the wiggas and wapanese). Is it really this way? If so, why did it happen, and how does it work? Is miscegenation not common?
Sorry if this question sounds dumb, but I'm really trying to understand how North American society works in order to analyse the enviroment I live in (how we deal with racism and other sorts of prejudice).
