Bomb found on Spanish rail track

Bomb was determined to be very similar in type (same explosive) to the March 11th bombings.

QUICK! Vote out the Socialists!

Bomb Found on Rail Line in Spain

By DANIEL WOOLLS

MADRID, Spain (AP) - Police found a bomb Friday under the tracks of Spain's bullet train line between Madrid and Seville, the interior minister said, less than a month after a deadly commuter rail attack that killed 191 people.

Bomb-disposal experts alerted by a railway employee found 22-24 pounds of explosives about 40 miles south of Madrid, Interior Minister Angel Acebes said.

The explosives were connected to a detonator with a 450-foot cable, the minister told a news conference.

Acebes said it was not clear who was behind the bombing. The national news agency Efe quoted police sources as saying preliminary analysis suggested the explosives might be a Spanish brand called Goma 2 Eco, the same used in the March 11 terrorist bombings in Madrid.

The tracks are used by Spain's Ave trains, which can reach speeds of 186 mph.

Friday was a busy travel day in Spain, with trains and highways full of people leaving home for Easter vacation, but the state rail company RENFE said no train was close to the bomb when it was found.

Bomb disposal experts disarmed the bomb, reports said.

On March 11, 10 backpack bombs ripped through four commuter trains in Madrid, killing 191 people and injuring more than 1,800. The focus of the investigation is a Moroccan extremist group with links to al-Qaida. The bombs were detonated with cell phones attached to the explosives.

On Thursday, police in northern Spain defused three letter bombs addressed to journalists in Madrid.

Acebes said the origin of the letter bombs has not been determined, although the mechanism of the bombs is "similar to those that have been used by anarchist groups on previous occasions."

I thought the Socialist party victory in the election and its subsequent change of policy on iraq was supposed to protect them from terrorism.

I thought the only reason they found it was because the train went over it and it didnt go off?

"The device was connected to a detonator by a 136-meter (446-foot) cable, Acebes said. But it lacked an initiator, and Acebes speculated that whoever placed the bomb had to flee before finishing the work"

Fauty detonator?
Punk ass terrorist operator error?
Luck?
Devine intervention?

I agree. It is funny that the Spanish narrowmindedness,on the issue of "if they never got involved in Iraq", would have left them un susceptible to a terrorist attack. Also if other goverments and people are thinking around the same lines they are sadly mistaken. The whole idea or terrorist attacks is plain and simple. It is used to instill fear in a society to meet ones own ends. It obviously worked on the Spanish.

VIVA ESPANA! LOL

I'm no expert on the Spanish situation, but I was under the impression that the primary reason for the conservatives getting voted out was because of them lying about ETA's supposed involvement in the bombings. Further to that, are you seriously asserting that Spain wasn't more of a target due to their involvement in the war in Iraq? Undoubtedly, the fact that they're a major western power also puts them at risk, but surely their involvement in the Iraq war also contributed to the danger level/risk.

I don't think that anyone thinks that they were not at risk, full stop before the Iraq war, however, I do believe that the war increased the threat that was already there.

I don't live in Sapin or am I an expert them either, but this is what I recieved from news coverage. I really believe that the driving factor in the conservatives getting voted out is from all of the anti-American sentiments and news coverage of what the people were saying about, "if their country would never have gotten involved in Iraq" and some blamed the US for their situation should answer your question. The whole Iraq war has them a bit sour more than the government blaming the ETA, which played a minor role in my opinion. Of course when you get involved the risk and lvl of danger goes up. Someone would have to be plain stupid not to realize this. Do you think that a nation should sit by idly and wait for the terrorist to come a calling?
I for one would not.

Its funny now the terrorists are sending letters to the Spanish embassy in Cairo telling the government that they will commit more acts of murder against civilians if the government doesn't pull out of Iraq and yes folks Afghanistan. I believe the Spanish people have to do what they feel is in the best interest of Spain, however it is really striking when people believe that they can distance themselves from this menace facing the world today. Good luck Espana and may you retreat from Iraq, maybe rightfully so, and Afghanistan as well and then the terrorists will leave you alone.
