Sony MDR-700 Headphones

I know many of you have them, for those that have them and they have not cracked yet (as I'm sured you've heard they are notorius for doing so). I've got a solution to keep them from breaking, once they break you wont' be able to use them anymore. The hinges are made of plastic and will crack. Mine were starting to crack, just from home use only.

Here are pictures of both sides. I used two small wire ties and crazy glue. Be careful with the glue.

Left Side

Right Side

They work no differently than before, had I not done this, they would surely have broken by now.

Well, for $200+ I expect them to last more than two years.

A better solution is just simply to not purchase them in the first place

Hey Tw1tch,

Yup, that's about the best way of sorting it..
I think if you do a search you may find that I have suggested this before but if nothing else it goes to show that great minds think alike eh Tw1tch?

The point made that if you pay that sort of money for they you do expect them to work is very valid though.

Cheers
Nem

Yeah true... Keep in mind though, that if you make your living off djing and play out consistently, then they may be worth it.

Shame on Sony though for knowing that they have a engineering issue (or poor quality) and they refuse to redesign the headphones.

edit: and kudos to tw1tch for the nice up close pic and tip. I havent yet tried this. I have mine with rubber bands and super glue.. but that will fail eventually. I will upgrade to the wire ties and see how it goes

Yah, rubber bands don't have the holding power wire ties do. They're perfect for this, and the glue is merely to hold the ties in place really.

Works well, I don't handle them any different than before.

This is where countless people have had their's crack, it's an engineering flaw and happens all the time, it's only a matter of time. You can take your chances, but your playing with odds which are highly in favour of them cracking!

the Pioneer HDJ-1000s are a work of art.

btw, Nem, what phones do you use?

ive also been looking at some technics cans, Jask (Jack Meredith) uses the ones im referring to, and they seemed quite flexible. he let me mess around a bit with them afterwards, they sounded quite nice, but i wasnt on them enough to really evaluate, plus i was a bit buzzed.
