Question about record releases

i recently attempted to purchase a record that had been out of stock for a while. I wrote to them and asked when they expected it to be back in stock. They said that I would have to wait for a repress.
What is that exactly? how are trance/techno record releases different than most CD's?

I'm under the impression that there is an initial release with a limited amount of copies, if those sell out then you have to wait for the label to issue a repress and that they can't just sell them as ordered. Is this correct? Also, in some descriptions of tracks on online stores it will say something like "just re-released with re-work by (your name here)" is this the same as a repress?
I know that it probably depends on the size of the label and popularity of the record but it's a little confusing to me. Thanks!

In a sense it's both a blessing and curse when it comes to spinning vinyl.

It sucks when you can't get your hands on a track that you want, but I think that the limited edition nature of (most) vinyl helps to add value, as well as creating a degree of uniqueness for those of us that don't have everything on promo lists mailed to us.

For this reason, I think that vinyl tends to hold it's value fairly well, so long as it is in decent condition. A more extreme example would be a local buddy of mine, who has a copy of Orbital - Halycon on vinyl, apparently it's worth a few hundred bucks at this point...

We may see a mass migration to digital decks and spinning legitimate MP3s in the near future, but I'm not sure doing so is a good thing for the industry overall...
