When using a soft synth and a sequencer what is the best way to record your leads and melodies? seperately or on the fly?

What ever suits you the best. Honestly there is no the best way to do it.

Well, with a soft synth you dont really 'record' your leads. Instead you sequence the mix and export to an audio file. This way you can make changes to your melodies much easier than if you were to record the melody on its own, and import it back into the mix.

Importing.. exporting...what are you talkin about? That went over my head.

I thought the question was do you record them step-based or LIVE. No?
I almost always record them live. I hate step sequencers but it's the only way for me to get great drum loops and killer arp's.

Step sequencer. I just hate playing things on the keyboard over and over again until i get it right. Anyway, it's hard to do arped melodies (not an arp exactly, but with every note filled in) by hand. I just figure out melodies on the keyboard, then type them in.

This is the way I do it.

First I tend to play around with the keyboard on the Yamaha CS1x synth, just with some favourite preset, no matter will the lead eventually be recorded with hardware or software. When I've come up with a lead melody that I like, I record it live into the sequencer, but never leave it like that. Then I step-sequence and edit the recorded notes, add things etc. until I think it sounds good enough. So I do not really record my melodies live, because I think timing doesn't really work out that well then. Figuring out new melodies on the hardware's own keyboard just feels more natural to me, I have a hard time coming up with melodies just "like that" in the step sequencer.

I don't get along with the mouse when it comes to writing down melodies in the sequencer. Don't know why. I even found it easier using the keyboard as note input back in the old mod-tracking days, although the spread of the octaves among the keyboard's keys was a bit funky if you ask me.

i dont have a midi keyboard..

so must do with mouse , i can get some good leads out of it sometimes.

Good for you... As I can't really get shit out with my mouse.

But when toying with my piano I sometimes get some nice melodies out but when trying to get them to sequencer with my mouse I'm totally helpless.

I hit "RECORD" in Project5 and play away on the keyboard (mine's a Korg Trinity) and then have a jam session with some chord progressions...and after finding something I like...hit "STOP" and then edit out all the stuff up to that point.
It then displays your "good lead" in the P-SEQ step-based sequencer so that you can see it and make changes or automate it further with pans or fades etc.
This seems the most logical way for me, but then again I have 10 years of classical piano ...maybe its just me.... why wouldnt you all just record your audition sessions??

I usually play out the melody on the keyboard and refine it using an editor. That way I don't have to adjust the velocity each time I input something into an editor. But I'm pretty much a newbie.
