That statement is partly true.... only the part that says "techno is what people who don't listen to it call it..."

the rest is false.... techno is actually just another genre, like trance, house, etc.... Techno is electronic music in its rawest form (IMO), and is the stuff you will frequently find Jeff Mills, Picotto, and usually Vath spinning...

I believe the ENTIRE classification of music is called "electronica", and there follow your subdomains of "trance, progressive house, house, happy hardcore, d-n-b, jungle, techno, etc...." At least this is what Mixmag said over a year ago.

I believe that in the states electronica is known to most as techno.

ABT is right! Techno is it's own genre just like Trance and House. Techno is VERY repetitive with little to NO build-ups and breakdowns. I call it DJs music because it's REALLY easy and fun to mix because the tracks are very constant and often minimal. It's prolly the best (easiest?) genre to keep a mix of two or more tracks going for a long time (ie. overlapping tracks).

There are also the cross-genres of Tech-Trance and Tech-House, which are basically just really repetitive sample based Trance and House. Pure techno is usually a little harder, more abrassive and/or minimal.

Some Techno DJs of note include Richie Hawtin, Dave Clarke, Carl Cox and Mauro Picotto, just to name a few. Altho I believe the last two have only started spinning Techno more recently. I don't think they used to spin it as much or at all.

I enjoy Techno, especially live at parties, but usually only in small doses. I can rarely stand a whole set or mixed CD of techno. I think it has a much bigger effect live rather than just listening to it at home.

heheh.... there's where you and i differ my friend....

Techno is my favorite genre, and i can listen to Picotto for HOURS!! i dont know, maybe its the hard beats, but you are right about mixing - its easy NOT because of the same beats (although that is easy too)... but b/c in regular trance you have buildups and refrains and basically parts of songs with no beats (and intros with no beats sometimes)... so that kinda makes it harder to spin uplifting i feel.... granted i can do it, (who can't?), but it is easier to spin techno....

Techno just moves my body crazy... i can't stand still at a Picotto show! everyone has their preferences though....

Cheers!

Techno exists and will always probably exist. Techno is getting more bangin for those who like it. From the first generation that included juan atkins, derrick may, kevin saunderson and the second generation of carl craig, kenny larkin, stacy pullen. I love techno besides trance, it is true that techno is going into other genres like house with tech-house and others.

"Techno" is used around the world to describe the style what we, a bunch of geeks , call "trance."

In reality techno has become associated, almost in everyone's mind, with Euro-dance and lots of synths. Now don't start attacking me, I'm stating the truth. That's how it is. But we call this style "trance."

The thing is that only a year ago, if you played to me some uplifting trance anthem I would certainly classify it as "techno." Last year I didn't even know that trance was something you could dance to. In my mind "trance" is slow music that you can meditate to.

Well here in Mexico, if you say "Techno" people will think on any kind of electronica and if you say "electrónica" people will immediately relate it to generes such as big beat or chemical beats, things are changing now but since the trance scene is still kinda underground....there are a lot of misunderstandings

Well you would think so if you had never heard the music before. Lets call Trance a Train ride, catch it and you will be on a journey. Read what I have to say. Trance is the right name for the music because if it was to slow you wouldn't be moving anywhere now would you. True Trance music between 135-145 bpm is called the sucking zone where things can progress and build into a hypnotic like state. If it were any slower you wouldn't be going anywhere, and if it where any faster you would fall off the so call ride. lets just say its the right speed to catch the Train
Read that again and play some Trance and you will know what I'm talking about
