Tampa - vent
The sole purpose of this thread/post is just for me to vent. There are many things that I love about Tampa, but the music and club scene here are not some of those things. The thread about 93.3 is what brought this on so please forgive me for ranting, but I swear it's like therapy for me.
Thank you in advance, FLTA, for providing a forum that allows me to express my feelings!
VENT
The music and club "scene" in Tampa sucks. If I want to hear trance I have to go to Miami or Orlando when they get the big names in town. I'm STILL waiting for Tampa to bring PvD back and it seems like they will NEVER bring Tiesto or Ferry here. If I won our state lottery (when it was banked in the high numbers and not at a minimal amount) I swear I would invest in DJ's & artists that are friends of mine that have undiscovered talent. I would buy or create a sound studio and let my friends use it to create/produce music. I would buy or invest in a nightclub. I'm part Seminole Indian so maybe I could talk the tribe into letting me put a club right there on the reservation. Yeah...now that would be nice. Not to compete with Floyds, but they are owned by Hard Rock and they have to follow whatever HR says. This is obviously a fantasy because it would never happen, but shit it would be nice not having to abide by the laws of the county.
I can guarantee you I would know how to make that club go the hell off because I would have plenty of help and the people that would help share my passion. I've been in the scene since 1991 and I worked in the club scene from 1994-1998 doing everything...including promotions. We here in Tampa have watched our scene go to hell and we have all felt like our hands were tied. I'm not talking about the partying scene...I'm talking about the days of bad ass clubs with good vibes. Long live Thee Fantasy Ranch! They razed that damn club, but that place still lives on in spirit. That place had such an awesome vibe. I had some of the best times there. Other clubs just can't compare. Clubs here open and close constantly because some of them don't have a clue what they are doing. There are some that think a mixed format of music is the way to go. One club...fine...but now everyone is doing it. I'm not dogging on Stormans because I happen to be very partial to them even though I don't care for their format on Friday nights. They still pack that place wall to wall and it always has a good vibe. If only they let them play just a little more trance!
I would love to be able to own a club that I could have my best friend be the resident DJ at. His style is a mixture of Tiesto and PvD. Every weekend that club would play trance. I would succumb to the masses and play house and breaks during the week to appease them, but on Saturday it would be trance music only. Maybe people would be resistent at first, but after the response I saw at George Acosta's last show when my best friend and George spun trance for 8 hours together I know people would come. Look how many came out for Oakie on a Tuesday night...days after Sasha was here and right before the WMC! Look how many people traveled to Orlando to see Tiesto & Ferry Corsten. People beg for trance on my friend's message board and when he spins it out at places like the Amp the response is insane.
"My club" would be the only club open in the entire Tampa Bay area that did a trance night. Let the other clubs fight it out for the hip hop and break beat crowds. I would have the crowd that I love..."tranceaddicts"! I would bring all the big names in and have my best friend open for them. I would charge a reasonable amount at the door and I wouldn't charge a fortune for a bottled water or an energy drink. I would go broke doing it...but damn, I would be happy in the process. I would put this damn town back on the map as a place that DJ's want to be. People everywhere would talk about how amazing the vibe was in that club...how cool all the people are that go there (people like FLTA's). And...they would talk about the music. Music that they have never heard before. DJ's that they have never seen.
You hear the big name DJ's talk about Miami all the time. When do you ever hear them breathe the name Tampa? Instead I go out to places where I have to listen to people make stupid comments that trance is boring...trance puts them to sleep...trance has the same monotonous beat to it (???). Or worse yet...the only radio station that is a little diverse is so behind in the times that when they announce this "brand new song" that was released...it's ATRC...a year later.
As it is...
I will never win the lottery
I will never own a studio
I will never own a nightclub
Tampa will continue to be stuck in a time warp
Anyone that bothered to read this...thanks for listening/reading.
I'll quit my bitchin now.
