i need to convert an adobe illustrator image to either a jpg or gif..

can this be done with illustrator itself?

Dunno. Just take a screenshot of it.

No don't take a screen-shot of it.

Go under file and choose export. select the jpeg option and save the file.

you could just "save as" and then choose jpeg.

No you can't. The only file format options in the save as dialog of Illustrator 10 are:

Adobe PDF (.PDF)
Illustrator (.AI)
Illustrator EPS (.EPS)
SVG (.SVG)
SVG Compressed (.SVGZ)
