Exclamation Review on Lucid Manchester

I was searchin for more info about the club and here're a cpl of reviews I found...(There'e more but more along the same lines as these);

http://www.student-direct.co.uk/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=616

Last week whilst in Lucid for the first and last time I overheard many of Manchester's finest saying "this is crap", "they bleed you dry" and "the bouncers are dicks". This did not come as a surprise.

Having queued for one hour beforehand amongst scantily-clad women looking to shag a Premiership footballer, neanderthal men looking to fight a Premiership footballer and people like me wondering what the hell we were doing we went in. Apart from the stupid dresscode ((if you have a beergut or enhanced breasts, Ben Sherman shirt or imitation Gucchi dress, and a bad attitude, you are assured to get in)), entry was smooth. The £ 10 door price was'nt though.

Usually, in a good club like Sankey's Soap, £ 10 would get you until 4AM of quality underground house music, a nice, relaxed atmosphere and a good mix of beautiful people, loving their music and having a good time.

This got us until 2 AM of being herded in like cattle, extortionate drink prices, aggressive, single middle-aged men trying to pull women half their age, crap, commercial dance music and an intimidating atmosphere. In Sankey's Soap they close the night down by the dj playing an end-of-night tune that everyone appreciates, but here at 2 AM (!) the crappy music stopped silent. It would'nt surprise me that they were probably taking it off "Now 53" or some other crappy complation.

As you can probably tell I won't be going back there again as I'd rather hang myself (my bank manager would probably do it anyway) than give my money to a club that does not appreciate its customers. A club should belong to the ravers and as soon as we kick out the blood-sucking corporate clubs like Lucid, the better.

The final pieces of the Printworks (Europe's Largest Indoor Something or Other) are slipping in to place, and this, a huge 1300 capacity club/bar, looks like it could be one of the most important venues they've signed up. Ran by a Canadian megacorporation, Lucid was initially aimed at the trendy upmarket crowd (see advertising with sexy models). However it doesn't seem to have gone exactly to plan. Every alternate Thursday is a Beach Party ("Will you go down when the sun goes down?") with a mix of dance and pop, whilst a School Disco occupies the other Thursdays. Wednesdays are retro night, although the entry price remains firmly in the Y2K era (£4.50 after 11).

Don't get me wrong, this is a really cool space. Considering this is basically a rather large basement, the internal design is quite trendy with plenty of areas to explore and bars to provide you with sustenance...the problem for me was the crowd - it reminded me of Infinity. If you're launching a venue with glossy adverts but then decide run School Discos, you haven't really stuck to your gameplan. Sure you want to make money, but take a hit during the week and make sure that your Friday and Saturday nights are something special. The problem is my initial visit on a Friday was disappointing, particularly with the DJ who was loved to fade-out records, then fade the next one in, although his tune selection was passable

One thing I do dislike is the spin surrounding venue openings now, and how embarrassing it is when the venue doesn’t deliver. Give Lucid an hour of your time and see if you think it " has totally remixed Manchester's entertainment and dining experience". Alternatively, one night, when you're "happily trekking from bar to restaurant around Manchester, enjoying a fairly shallow experience", try Lucid as they promise that it will make your life go "BAM!". Clearly a press release from the pen of a batman writer. To conclude, Lucid wasn't really a hit (KAPOW!) with me, although I was knocked back (THUD!) by the amount of space in the venue. Try it, and see if it knocks you out (DOOSH!)

Your thoughts;

I actually posted to ask about Lucid Manchester in the UK forum section, and got similar negative responses. It's to badif the same problems carry into Lucid Toronto, because it could be a wikid venue for both commercial and underground music alike.
...*tisk *tisk *tisk

I got my doubts about Lucid TO.

I know mondays are not my bag (gay nite). But I heard they've been opening their doors for uptight VIP's from TO's Bay street district

I'll wait to hear from the attendees before I go
