Confused How do you cdj's work?

If your using a cdj, which kind of cd's do these things play? For instance, does a typical 80 min, 700 mb cdr with 12 tracks(obsiouly your not going to be able to spin them back to back) work? Or can you only play cd's with one or two tracks on the cd?

I was debating on switching over and selling most of vinyl but before hand, I would burn all my vinyl tracks onto cdr.

All CD players can play CDR and CDRW. The number of tracks you can fit depends on the length of the track. I usually can fit about 9-10 tracks on one CD. Ideally, you want to leave room on the CD for rough handling during gigs. (i.e. fingerprints along the edge of the CD) Be sure to use only brand name CDRs because the quality of CDRs will affect playback performance. For the paranoid, you can burn your CDs at a slower rate (4X and 8x) to insure best results. Personally, I burn at the fastest rate my burner can do if I'm making a CD for personal use. For gigs, I edit most of my tracks to the first beat for fast cueing.

Your post asked only about CDRs but if you're interested on how the players work, I'd be happy to help as well.

They play any kind of CDs, 80-minute, 12 track and 5-minute, one track alike, even CDs full of samples and such.

yeah. even the promo CD's i get... i still put on my computer and burn onto a CD that has like 8 or 9 tracks on them. It's a lot easier then shuffling through a million CD's during a gig.

I just got a Denon DN S5000 a week ago. So far its going well. A little tricky to get used to it but it works well. I put about 8 tracks onto a cd. I need to start to edit the tracks so its easy to cue though. Scottaculous, which program you use to do that

Any wave editor will do. Soundforge is always good because you can use that to record sets with too. I sometimes use Cubase SX if I need to re-edit the tune.

not true! especially with cd-rw! not nearly all players play those and some crap ones don't even play cd-rs.

and ffs people! stop getting cdj gear just so you don't have to pay for the music you spin. that is wrong! (burning your currently owned vinyls to cd and them selling them is no different either!)

Actually, I believe many CDJ's have an "alpha track" feature, which lets you play more than one track at the same time, on the same cd.

If you burn all your vinyl tracks to cdr and then sell your vinyl, you suck. Good luck bringing burned tracks to your next big gig. Do what you can, support the scene.

but that would be only dual cdj's, right? always thought of that detail as a big issue
