LIRR to Hamptons?

Has anyone gone over there by such means? Is it a viable option?
Which beaches are good and near a train station (i.e. walking distance or a cheap cab ride) ?

LIRR has stops to Hampton Bays and Southampton...however it'll be close to a 2.5 hour train ride..the beaches near by are pretty good, the real nice ones are in Easthampton where all the glitz and glamour is.

Long Beach is 10 mins from where I live and is on the same line as my town, Lynbrook. It is the orange colored LIRR line...Penn to Long Beach is only about 45 mins and will run you about 6 bucks...I think they run a ticket and day pass deal on the weekends at Penn Station ticket windows. When you get off the train, you are on Park Ave and National, I think...just walk straight up 4 blocks and you'll see the board walk....and they allow topless sunbathing too now.

the LIRR is a pain in the friggin arse. I take that goddamn piece of shit to school sometimes and it's always got problems-delays, red signals, "there is a train ahead of us, we will be moving shortly," "we are experiencing some unavoidable technical problems at this time..." BAH!

and for what they CHARGE, they should be shot
