Question VST-effects applied on hardware?

My hardware synth has the basic effects, including cutoff, resonance, delay, reverb etc. etc. But what I really miss is the possibility to compress the sounds coming out of it, as I'm pretty sure the CS1x has no compressing tool built-in, at least I haven't found anything during the five years I've had it in my home studio. Is it possible to apply software effects to hardware signals?

should be possible but very cpu eating
you'd better get a h/w box, they are warmer too.

it's not fun saying this but there's no idea really to go and buy a cheap compressor because it will sound like shit in 8 of 10 times :/

now I'm not gonna come dragging with my neve and crane song compressors again don't worry...just make shure you spend a good amount on a comp because it'll be well worth it

Hehe, I've seen your neve and crane "promotion" in neighbouring threads, and I promise to at least take a look at it if I find my way to the company's website. Tack för tipset...but I assume I'll have to just do it the simpler (and not so glamorous way): just record midi to a wave file, on which I eventually apply compressing etc. Not the most fun and direct way by far, but when your wallet doesn't like it, what can you do.

behringer compressors are cheap ass (certainly 2nd hand)

I'd never bother recording seperate tracks to wav cuz if you even want to make a small change you can do the whole f*cking thing over again. So make your choice : living in a pain or working a week longer in the holidays and buy a compressor.

Hehe, okay got your point. Too bad every single day of mine is packed of 8-12 hours of reading, even weekends and summertime, so all my extra money comes from my "sponsors" (=my old folks). Aren't you Dezma going to give me any spare time, huh?!?!!

Yes, you can apply VST effects to hardware synths. There is no need to go out and purchase a compressor if you already have a good software one.

You need a good soundcard though if you plan to do it because you will get latency from lower end cards which you don't want.

but it is very cpu eating if you want a good latency. If you want to record and realtime efx on your synth with low latency you'd better have a monstercomputer as I'm assuming all non-cs1x sounds come out of softsynths.

I was more thinking of non-realtime. Wouldn't even dream of realtime with other mixer tracks occupied by samples and softsynths. Latency can even now be a problem at times.

Well if you are using Cubase, it's more than possible. Its in the manual under "direct monitoring" I think. If you're not doing it in the mix, then latency should matter too much.
