Sometimes dropping the pitch on vocals can make robotic types sounds, you're right, but it also changes the length of the sound, so if you want to simply apply a robotic feel to a vocal sample, a vocoder might be the best option. I've had trouble getting the robotic sound out of the orange vocoder though. It seems good for airy type vocals though.
I think there are pitch shifters that can alter the pitch without changing the tempo. I don't know the names of any software that does it though. Vari-Os is brilliant at in the hardware scope though.
