when i first started DJ'ing at college sometimes i was forced to play a certain "quota" of what the owner wanted to hear, it was like doing 30 mins of house/trance and what i wanted, then doing 30 mins of hip-hop and pop shit. I just went down to the local record shop in town and you can find new releases on vinyl that will come with some kind of lame pop-house / uber breakbeat remix.

For example look in the store for the latest hip-hop/r&b/pop song on vinyl, usually the vinyl pressings these days will have a couple remixes. This sounds like what your looking for. I (sigh) distinctly remember playing (I think it was Todd Terry) house remixes of Ushers - "You Remind Me" and Aerosmiths - "Jaded" among other pop hits. You can find house remixes of the new pop tunes on the vinyl releases usually...

note: these days i make sure that wherever i get lined up to play, i will have free reign over what records i decide to spin. usually i'll do progressive house -> trance but some nights i'm in a funky disco house mood or a more techno mood, so talk it over before accepting the gig if you have that option! good luck

I'd rather die hungry and lonely than play pop. I think he made the right choice.

well, he didn't ask for your specific opinion on what he was trying to play, he only asked for general advice. you probly don't even DJ and it is getting old listening to comments from kids saying stuff like this. if you were in a big city trying to get a foot in the door at a club you want to play at, sometimes you have to make a decision to play what they want to hear for a bit. i know it sucks, i have been there before. have you? if i hadn't done that, i most likely would still be DJing solely in my bedroom looking at the wall, but i'm not, i have creative freedom at certain places now. and i mean places that had never had a trance/house night before. if you want to have a bedroom DJ career, than go on with that kind of attitude. once you build a name for yourself (unless you already have connections) then you can do what you want and say screw the promoter/club owner. comments like this are getting old and if you can't be positive then go somewhere else please!

good luck aldrian! only other advice i can offer you is something i did (if you don't want to play this pop type stuff that is). i teamed up with a buddy a while back who mixed mostly hip-hop/pop/top 40 stuff and it was a lot easier this way, he'd go on with his records, then i'd follow with EDM.

i wasn't trying to offend you dude, i was just saying i agree with him, that one's dignity is more important then getting to your target fame/success faster. if you want to disagree with that, if the size of your wallet is what matters most above all, fine, sell out, but don't be offended that some of us hold our dignity or principles higher then the greed for big $$$, and don't try to pretend that you have to sell out to make it - if you have enough talent and determination and put enough sweat/passion behind what you do without having to resort to that disgusting act (imo of course), you'll make it.
