first try at a prog/trance production [download sample]

Hey I have been composing music for a while, but nothing with a beat until this. Most of my other productions have been ambient or orchestral.
Download sample of this untitled track HERE

This is a VERY rough version with not many things eq-ed at all yet. Please post some feedback, and be very brutal. Thanks

Dan

Like you said, EQ-ing is needed but you know what. Especially the the hi-hats/cymbals/rides. Is there a cymbalhit or a ride on each bassdrum hit?

The breakdown at 35 seconds when it becomes completly silent throws me of. Instead of going to complete silence, fade in the rain earlier while the echoing-wooshes fade out.

The soft synth "guitar-sounding" that goes in the bg for the entire song could use some variation, perhaps cut it on some places, abrupt pause with a delay on it..basically variate it some. Cut/add notes?

In general the melody is good, chill stuff, not my favourite bag, but maybe my impatience makes me a bad critic?

Hey thanks for the reply. It is a ride on each bass drum hit, which sounds like complete CRAP to me, I have been fiddling with it to try and fix it. Its hard for me to program beats/perc because I played violin for 10 years, melody is what I know best. I will try fading the rain in earlier, or just never fade it out as its playing the whole time. Please help me out with some more comments!

Hi Dan,

I absolutely love your breakdown. It's ambient appeal is awesome.

As for entering the breakdown the song just dropped off and made me think it was over, please fix that.

The bass is nice, but it sounds like it has some technical problems. Check to make sure that it's on the right phrase (ie: every major event happens at 16 or 32beat intervals).

Production quality:

Way too much highs, ouch. Need more mids. A little muddy on the bottom.
