I have say that the Technics are obviously without a doubt the best turntables on the market. These babies could last you for 11 years and still work with minor defuncts. Now, I'm sure the motor on a used turntable will work fine. Once bidding, check for the turntable's age, but if they only have months of use and the seller is a trusted member, then I wouldn't see why not by them used and save some money; specially if they're going to be for bedroom use. As time goes by the turntables will get a bit rusty, I'm pretty sure the motor will still work fine, but some defunts that you might find can be in the grounding aspect. The hoove that you are supposed to ground might get a bit rusty therefore causing the turntable to hiss a bit, but other than that, well, the pitch slider might not be as smooth, the motor might loose a bit of its pattern, but nothing really big. Again, these signs start showing after years of use. So if you find one with only a couple months of use, then I suggest you to bid away! Then again you can find Technics MKII 1200's on the market for probably less or around $300?

I'm gonna get some soon. I've used them and the torque is amazing! I thought the MK2's were good but these babies blow them away!

Depends on what you buy when it comes to the motors. I know I have seen second hand Techs where the motors just aren't as powerful anymore. A lot of conditions could contribute to this problem. The zero lock (if I am thinking the same thing as you) was already addressed completely in the M3D, MK5, M5G models -- there is no zero click.

Actually the mk5 has the same motor and pitch control as the m3d. I can prove it by ripping both my m3d and mk5 apart if you wanna see. The only differences between the m3d and mk5 are:

1. Mk5 uses a LED target light as oposed to the incadescent bulb on mk2 and m3d

2. Mk5 allows a 6gram antiskate, while m3d only allows a 3gram.

3. the brake adj. pot is moved 1/4" to the right on the mk5's drive control pcb so you can adjust the brake without removing the platter.

Finally, the mk2 uses the same motor as well. the only real drawback on the mk2 is the 0% click for engaging quartz lock.

Bullshit. The torque on all the Tech's is the same AFAIK.

Personally, I got m3d's, because they are almost the same as mk5's, and were a bit cheaper. If I were you, I wouldn't pay extra for mk5's, no point.

Well I read a review comparing the 2 tables and it shown the new MK5 with a higher torque.

I have a 1990 & a 1999 1200 mk2...you wouldn't be able to tell which is which. Technics last forever. I would buy used 1200's without worry. The worst I've seen is pitch control problems due to drink spillage. But pitch controls can be changed for not too much $$$...
