Why does everyone ooooh and aaaaah over Japanese cars?

With the exception of a few (Mazda 787B, RX-7 (1994) and perhaps the modified celica engine going into the 2005 Lotus Elise 190), I can't stand them. Someone please explain the attraction to me?

Note: Current cars; 2001 BMW M5, 2003 BMW MINI CooperS, 1999 Expedition Eddie Bauer Edition, contemplating 1985 BMW M6 (european import)...

For $33k someone convince me not to get the M6 please!

There's a new BMW comming out soon...M1 or 1 or something with one...it's a smaller hatchback kinda version really cool lookin'

And by the way I don't like Japanese car's either but they have the most quality and durability - aka long lasting with much fewer repairs and maintenance.

Ya the 1 series should be out 2005-6 it's a cute little hatchback. Reliability... I dunno, one of my cousins has a 1990-1 750 that's still running. Mind you he lives in LA where the weather doesn't violate your car!

I remember hearing, the M5 engine is basically going into the M3, the M5 is getting a new bigger engine, and the new M2 is getting the M3 engine.

I highly doubt it lol. Actually I know that won't happen. The 2005 M5 is getting a new drivetrain 5.0L V10 500+ hp. The M3 is keeping the 3.2L I6 333hp.

I swear I read in some magazine the M3 was going upto 400HP.

though I could very easily be mistaken

BMW is a good performance car, but falls apart quite quickly starting with suspension then to electronics, it's a perfomance car but not reliable and expensive to repair, japanese cars have high performance and are reliable at the same time, as for your question, well could be the fact that the japanses cars perform better, look better, more reliable, which most of the time is a prefrence anyway, if someone likes a car they don't care if it breaks often.

I like Japanese cars because of the low maintenance, good fuel economy, reliability and high resale value. I have an Acura 1.6EL and even though its a family sedan it's a pleasure to drive, especially when that v-tech engine kicks in.

That iV-TECH at about 6000RPM almost feels like a turbo! ... it's great.

But what about the total package? Interior finish, attention to detail, driver oriented dashes, handsfree everything, BMW M POWER! And the fact that the M5 is four thousand pounds and still puts almost any stock japanese car to shame! (And is way more reliable than any modified Japanese car that can beat it!)

Actually is there a stock Japanese 4 door sedan that can take the M5 on the track?

Most def interior in the Japanese cars is lacking big time...compared to the Europeans...in the north american cars the interior looks like it's been designed and constructed by a 3 year old
