Volkswagon and Formula 1 ?
Future VW boss interested in F1
But it will take time [01/10/01 - 17:35]
As thought for some time already, Bernd Pischetsrieder, the future boss of one of the world's biggest car manufacturers Volkswagen, has expressed his interest in the company perhaps entering Formula One sometime in the future. It is a well known fact that Pischetsrieder, who will succeed Ferdinand Piech in April of next year, is a huge fan of the sport.
According to the magazine Stern he apparently has a concrete plan to get VW into F1, and already the company has an engine that is suited to an F1 car. However if they should chose to enter the sport, it will not be in the next year or so but rather a few years down the line. In fact when Pischetsrieder was in charge of BMW he prepared for three years before they entered.
"Everyone knows that I am an ardent fan of Formula One. Even if we decide today to take part, we would enter only in three or four years,” Pischetsrieder said, stressing that the company does not have a team to enter with just yet at this high level of competition.
As F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has stressed that only 12 teams may be apart of F1, with Toyota filling the last remaining spot next year, Volkswagen's options would be to either buy into a small less competitive team and then develop their own car, or to provide to a team like Jordan or Sauber with a VW engine. The second possibility would be the "faster” of the two, according to Pischetsrieder.
