Chris's Exams -> The Full Horrifying Story

I've been posting this elsewhere. Thought you could all do with a look at it

These are REAL exams. Not pansy ones.

K all my exams will be posted in here, cos I know you all want to see them.

Only modifications is the grey block on the front page, to get rid of the lecturers names. :tup:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

04/05/04 - Classical & Relativistic Mechanics

A bit of a shitty start. Nasty exam and the stuff I had really studied for didnt come up. Think I passed it though. :up:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

06/05/04 - Quantum Physics

A nice exam. Just as expected. Some nice questions on ladder operators and commutation of matrices. So I was happy. Question 3 was a bollocks, so I left that one out. :up:

10/05/04 - Electromagnetism & Optics

:x Enough said. Horrid exam. Not sure if I passed this one.

12/05/04 - Thermal Physics

We all knew this one would be hard, but it was do-able in the end. A long paper, but quite fair. One of the lads almost had a breakdown before the paper, he'd pulled four all-nighters and was stressed out. We had to drag him into the exam hall :erm: . Think I passed this one though.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

14/05/04 - Mathematical Methods

This was another one we all expected to be tough. The lecturer has a habit of making the paper unnecessarily long, and making you do a whole pile of pointless algebraic manipulation where you simply dont have time. This one was only an hour and a half, and you go into it KNOWING you wont get it finished. But I think I passed it. :up:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

17/05/04 - Numerical Analysis & C++ Programming

Some of you might get a bit of this one . It was an easy enough one. Definatly passed it - did well in the C question and got out both the numerics questions I did - 3 & 6 :up:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

17/05/04 - Fourier Series & Linear Systems Analysis

Second exam of the day. Harder than we thought it would be, but not too bad. Was fucking exhausted when I sat this one. But I passed it, which is all that matters. :up:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

21/05/04 - Computational Mechanics

Was dreading this one, but in the end it was easy enough. Spent the last 3 days cramming for it and it paid off :w00t:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

25/05/04 - Lab Exam 1

Didnt know what to expect from this, and it was ok, I suppose. Got the first two parts out fairly easily, and made a stab at the others. So I passed it, I think.

Lab Exam 1

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

25/05/04 - Lab Exam 2

After lunch in the sun looking at birds, lab exam 2 was ten times worse than the first one. Absolutely horrible. I **think** I passed it, but I honestly dont know. Disgusting paper. Even though its in Excel, dont think that makes it easy, the Physics behind it involved a few tricks.

Lab Exam 2

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

31/05/04 - Problem Paper

Finally, the last one. We were dreading it, as the same lecturer that did the lab exams made this. But in the end it wasnt as bad as we thought it would be. 3 lecturers made the paper in the end, and it wasnt too bad. Passed it anyway, and hopefully a bit above that. :tup:

18/06/04 - Results Day

Results are out. :erm:

Ok. Heres how it works. Each module is assigned 'credits'. Physics written (labs and Problem Paper results are contained within modules, so arent awarded credits) are worth 10 each, Applied Maths 5 each. Gives a maximum of 60.

To pass the year, you need a minimum of 50 credits, with more than 35% in each module. Apart from this formality, credits are irrelevant. They do not count towards grades degrees etc.

35 - 40% - No credits awarded. (Known as Compensation)
40 - 50% - Pass
50 - 60% - 2nd Class Honour Grade 2
60 - 70% - 2nd Class Honour Grade 1
70 - 100% - 1st Class Honour

What they do next is they average the results across the 4 Physics modules. Get between 40-50%, you get a General Pass Degree and are not allowed to do 4th year. You need 50% or greater to do next year, and take a stab at an Honours Degree in the summer.

Chris's results

Classical & Relativistic Mechanics - 83/200 -> 41.5%
Quantum Physics - 139/200 -> 69.5%
Electromagnetism & Optics - 88/200 -> 44%
Thermal Physics - 91/200 -> 45.5%
Mathematical Methods - 35/100 -> 35%
Numerical Analysis & C++ Programming - 62/100 -> 62%
Fourier Series & Linear Systems Analysis - 50/100 -> 50%
Computational Mechanics - 52/100 -> 52%

Mathematical Methods -> Compensation
Credits, 55 :up:

I was quite surprised at this one. Thought I'd done better. Ah well. I passed by Compensation (By one mark :erm: ), and I dont have to do it next year anyway, so it doesnt matter at all. Perhaps should have done better in Fourier, but it doesnt matter. I'm happy enough with Numerics/C++, no major surprises with that, and Computational Mechanics - I said the paper was easy enough but the lecturer is known for EXTREMELY hard marking so I'm not surprised. Same happened in the paper we had with him last year.

Just scraped the 40 in Mechanics and Optics, the two I said I was most worried about after the evil papers they gave us. I was thrilled with Quantum, that 'saved' me, but would have liked the extra half percent to get the 70% and a First Honour in that, I'm not complaining though. Thermal - just as expected.

Lab Exams & Problem Paper - When I get back off holiday I'll go in and ask - I know they have the individual marks on file, and I'll put them up too. Have some lab reports to collect too so I'll get them as well.

Overall :

Physics Average -> (83+139+88+91)/800 -> 401/800 -> 50.125%

Chris can do next year.

By one mark.

By the skin of his fucking teeth

CHRIS HAS PASSED HIS EXAMS!!!!!
