My vision for a commericial radio station in Toronto

Well its been briefly discussed but i think this needs more attention.

What id like to see is a mainstream radio station playing all the current and classic dance music in the electronic genre. Im not talking about a Z103 type gino station either. Im talking about a station that can blend the serious genres of electronic together offering variety but at the same time offering an outlet for the true music connessuer.

Its been done in most places around the world. There are so many radio playable songs in our genre that would be a an amazing alternative to the hip hop and pop wasteland out there. Also, does a song really have to be played twice an hour for 4 months until people are so sick of it they cringe?

At night is when this station could really get serious by showcasing both syndicated mix shows from around the world such as Essential Selection and Carl Cox Global while also creating our own homegrown mix shows featuring local djs and artists. A good example already (which i think could be greatly improved upon) is the Smirnoff Experience show on 89.5.

Is the market there? Not as much as there would be for a station like FLow at this point. But i will say that the number of electornic music fans already existing in Toronto are greatly underestimated by broadcasters. They forget that this genre has a strong history in Toronto and although many people in their 30s dont go to clubs anymore, theyd still love to be able to hear new music in this genre on the radio. There was not much of a market in 1991 when Dance 108 (later Energy 108) came on the scene but they sure created one in a hurry didnt they?

Lets get back to decent radio programming and kick the repetitave endless drone that exists now to the curb.

i could definately see it working.

the only problem would be the canadian content rule. i don't know how many quality canadian EDM producers there are

but you're right that broadcasters underestimate the edm market. there are many people that don't know anything about EDM, but definately enjoy it.

small communities like this aren't representative of the EDM scene in Toronto. they may like the music, but they just don't want to take the time to actively post on a board like this.

I would love to see this happen.

...but ten years ago I wanted an all thrash metal station and it didn't happen.

the problem is the day hours. work hours. advertising dollars will not come in when no one will hear this during office hours. god knows how much i wanted global groove and 89.5 to succeed.

It will never happen sadly now that we have america style formats. Its all about flogging it to death to sell sell sell.

I wish someone with money and balls would change all that.

i think tunes from groups such as planet funk and shakedown are much more office friendly than anything on Flow could ever be.

During the day the format would be radio friendly (but not cheesy as in euro gino cheese) and at night (after 7) the real fun would start

I don't think it's just that someone needs to step up with the balls...the corporate community who's advertising money will have to sustain it needs to step up too.

Look at how badly BPM struggled to get sponsors of any kind. Every commercial break had the same few products and a bunch of BPM ads. Granted, the station's format was...lacking. Sure radio advertising is cheaper than TV, but you see what I mean...sponsors are still looking at huge, wide markets, not little niche ones.

I'd love to see it happen, and I think it could be done to...but I still don't think that the corporate community sees a viable market in the EDM scene (rightly or wrongly).

On the radio there are enough clubs and events that would be willing to advertise. Not to mention companies aimed toward youth like soft drinks and ford focus. i could see it working in Toronto. Maybe not elsewhere in North America but like i said, toronto has a very solid dance music history in it's favour.

I agree...it should be able to work here. I just wonder if anyone is confident enough that the necessary corporate $$$ will surface...it's out there...but will they choose to support an EDM station? I hope so.

The problem is that suits look to the US for ideas. As long as this happens it will never change.
