I seriously got a kick out of hearing Bush squirm when Carole asked him direct questions. What's more, she didn't back off one bit. Nice to see an interviewer not throwing softballs to Bush for a change.

I really wish we had less kiss-ass Washington reporters here. And I'm not just speaking about direct questions towards this Administration - I mean all politicians. I think the papers hold a direct responsibility to have all politicians be accountable, and not let them wiggle through easy questions. Do all European press corps. interview in this manner? Our American press corps. could take a few tips out of their handbooks.

Edit: The Bush Adminstration's response after the interview: cancelled interview with Laura Bush. Can't say I blame them really.

From what I saw he wasn't squirming but a bit abrassive with his "if you let me finish..."

I've seen interview in the US that were direct and pointed but more often against people like OJ and celebrities rather than political figures. Many ppl don't like OReilly and such but they can really go on the attack sometimes.

I think something can be gained from O'Reilly's approach. On the one hand, his straightforward direct tactics are admirable, but then he often goes towards badgering, ill-temperment, and cutting off responses when he does not hear what he wants to hear. Furthermore, even if he has a guest on from which he respects, if that guest does not agree with him at all, O'Reilly tries to settle on the most minor of issues he could at least get the guest to agree with him on (that was a bad sentence, but you get my drift). Often times this tactic loses the focus of the argument entirely.

So while I think some things could be taken from O'Reilly's approach, much can also be subtracted from it as well.

A very apt description of O'reilly. He's sharp, but has his weaknesses. I rarely ever watch him anymore as his interview style started to grate on my nerves. I'd rather listen to 10 minutes of calm dialect vs. 3 minutes of jumbled argument any day of the week.

I saw the interview last week on msnbc

I must say he was a bit rude considering he was on foreign soil and tons of protestors outside

do you ever watch CSPAN? There are White House reporters who do ask tough questions of the administration, but those comments almost never get reported on in the mainstream news shows later in the day.

I guess there's a kind of solace in the fact that the few that can watch such a show a show at that time of day aren't likely to be against the admin.
